Don't even try, I've already tried that point....I am assuming you didn't play Baseball at the collegiate level, therefore you just simply don't get it. The pitcher isn't really being a pussy, it just appears that way to those of us with no bias towards the game. I agree 100%, and have from the beginning, that intentionally hitting the batter is about as cowardly as you can get. It just shows that the pitcher fears the batter more so than the other way around.
I still say if a "mature" man throws a 90mph fastball at another "mature" man's head (or body for that matter), he needs a good healthy dose of "Act-Rite" from that mans bat. If that is the way people "play", then what a dumb game.
Do you guys watch hockey, football, boxing.....? There are a lot of unwritten rules, where, if broken, will get you hurt. We just see baseball's unwritten rules/consequences more exposed because of the nature of the game. I used to watch and play a lot of hockey.....if you roughed up the "star" forward ala Wayne Gretzky, PREPARE to get decapitated or at least have a player drop his gloves and break your nose. Football...OK, hit our quarteback after the whistle, or spear him, do anything dirty to him and you are getting chop blocked at your knees until you are either hurt, or understand that you have to play with integrity or players will try to end your season. Taunt the DB's too much after a touchdown, and look for a Strong Safety to try to crumble you in half when the QB overthrows the ball. GUYS, unwritten rules exist in all sports, and the consequences are very physical toward the idiot who chooses to break them...it is no different in baseball. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape when they hear of baseball's "system".
Mostly everyone agree's that Arod was an ass here, except a few Yankee fans. Go figure. Just picking at you 2. :D As far as a pitcher throwing at someone or whatever, It's called sending a message. They've been doing It for years, It's part of the game. Ever heard Randy Johnson talk about this?
The pitcher didn't hit Arod, he told him to stay off the mound....something Arod probably learned in Little League. He's an amazing talent but I'm not a fan of his antics. BTW, I don't think this would have made the news if it were any other player.
Yay!! Another discussion on the mystical "unwritten rules" of baseball. Did he just walk across my mound of dirt? This guy just stepped on my dirt! Did you see that? He stepped on my dirt!!! Just wait. Now I'm going to hurl a ball at his head at 95 mph! That'll show 'em! Nobody steps on my dirt!!!!!
I think this is being made into a bigger deal than it really is. They had a few words and that was it, A-Rod didn't get thrown at his next time up. To me it seems like it would be easier to just run around the mound, but whatever it doesn't really matter to me. Also, when a pitcher is going to hit a batter on purpose, chances are he's not going to throw at the batters head. Not always, but the majority of the time they simply just want to send a message for one reason or another. They certaintly do not want to kill the guy by putting a fastball on his head.
How many of you are subject to "unwritten" rules at work? Example. You work at a golf course for a single owner who works day in and day out. You decide you like to call off work "sick" on Mondays and Fridays. While there is nothing in your contract that states that you cannot call off sick on Mondays and Fridays, there is an unwritten rule in the work world that says....."if you call out on days bordering your off days you are a well know slacker, and EVERYONE knows it and you will be treated accordingly.....". So when it comes time for the owner of the golf course to evaluate your performance, or if he is mulling over you current employment status, he can and WILL look to see if you have violated any unwritten work rules. Your job may be in jeopardy as a result. Now, what is more severe, a pitcher educating some dumb player on the etiquette of a baseball game, or firing someone and therefore putting their well-being/living status/homelessness on the line? See, sports and the real world work hand in hand in the lessons that are interwined between the "game" and the real thing (ie life).
No, not really Hooker. I just have a different viewpoint than you. My point was, there are a lot of unwritten rules in life and one must adapt to those unwritten rules or face the consequences.
You're comparing slacking off at work, thus the consequence of being fired, to one guy stepping on another guy's mound of dirt, thus the consequence should be that he gets hit by a 95mph fastball?
Yes. When your boss tells you, "man you better shape up and start having all of your work completed by the end of the business day...", he is throwing that "fast ball at you at 95mph". Yes/no? What is the difference wether the "fast ball" is literal or figurative?
LOL my GOD!!! How many different ways do I have to say "I get it". I understand the purpose of pitching inside. I understand establishing the inside part of the plate and it's purpose. That's a far cry from intentionally throwing a fastball at a player with the only intent being revenge. 2 different scenarios. And if you can't see that, maybe you need to go back to college and play some more baseball. Aslo, I didnt' realize the criteria for knowing about sports is you must have played at the collegiate level. I didn't play college golf. I suppose I know nothing about the sport right?
All this condescending??? Why? You say you "get it". But you disagree with it. So what? No one's asking for your approval. We're telling you the way it IS. The criterium for knowing a game has nothing to do with playing in college. But I damn sure wouldn't be arguing a game I didn't fully understand with someone who does. If you don't see the possibility or the NEED to bean someone from time to time.....then no...you don't understand the game. That's just the way the game IS.
Would you consider it necessary for a DE to intentionally hit the QB with a helmet to helmet hit if the QB scruffed up his shoes the play before?
So? I get that you can't ground your club in a hazard too, but I disagree with it. I get the tuck rule in football but disagree with that. What's you point? Well good news.... I'm not looking for anyones approval. And thanks, but for the 14th time I know the way it is. I'm not allowed an opinion on the way it is? Thanks again for the clarification. For the 15th time I do understand the game and know the way it is. Yes, even though I didn't play at the college level there are those that can still know the game of baseball.
The diff. is.....I'm not calling out the powers that be at the USGA, condescendingly, for the OOB rule (stroke and dist.). It's pointless. It is what it is. And, BTW....you very much DON'T "get it".
Throw at his head...brawl. Throw at his ribs, trot to first base end of story. I do not see the big deal. I can assure you if arod ever gets to the national league his antics will cease. Nothing like watching your own pitcher get drilled and then come into the dugout and tell you that was your fault. the pussification of sports gets worse every year. Think Lebron could get away with that dance he does all the time if rodman and lambier were still around...and were talking about the softest sport of them all. Hope some of you guys do not have kids who excell in the game...if they keep your viewpoint of how dumb, immature etc the rules are...it will hurt your feelings counting the seams on little johnnys ribs.
