thank you for your service sir... my father was in the USAF for 28 years retired a full bird at 52 flew fighters in Korea and Nam....just passed the day before veterans day last year. I never had the stones to join up...
401k, roth IRA, and a few other investments Of retirement? I'd like to retire at around 60-65 No unless some of my other investments all of a sudden blow up. If so, I feel sorry for these people. My goal is to have a home wherever my kids/grandkids live, and to have a summer house on Whidbey Island in Washington.
I have zero problem with the portion of my taxes funding military families and retirements. Good one you brother. Honestly, there are days I wish my first fiance would have left me before college started than during because I'd of probably joined up and done the retirement route. I hold a lot of respect for those of you who did it.
Would like to "retire" between 55 - 60 from what I am currently doing. I don't think really in terms of retirement but of a redirection of effort to something else. I don't believe that it is healthy to, as many people think of retirement, to just quit work and fish, hunt, golf, etc. I think that your life needs some kind of purpose that motivates you and provides fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment. Having said that after I retire I would like to utilize my time to do volunteer work, etc. that allow me to give back in some form or fashion, most likely my church's ministries. I have been extremely blessed and feel a responsibility to help others.
I'm more of this mindset...slow down, not work full time sure...but I guarantee I'm the old guy that's sticking to a part time gig at a fun place to work or the church or a non-profit during retirement age while possible.
If everything works out as planned, our house will be paid off by the time we are 35. We will then be bumping up 401K's (My current company matches me + 5%). If the DH stays with his company, he is eligible for early retirement by 55 (He could be done sooner, if he wanted once house is paid for) - but I'd much rather him be home then on the road and away from home.
Thanks for the support Gentlemen! I wouldn't trade anything, even the freezing flightlines of No/Sodak or the broiling 'line of the Desert... Especially when I was drenched in Hydro Fluid orJet Fuel! Oly
did you ever do any in flight fueling? I have some cool pics my dad took from his Phantom pulling up to an air tanker....Late in Nam he flew RF4Cs and not fighters so much. then after that c130s and 141s if it had wings from the 50s till he retired in 75 he flew it..
I was a Hydro Technician on the KC/EC-135's, so besides chasing hydro bubbles and wiping down leaks, I worked on the Air Refueling Systems. I have plenty of pictures that I took laying back in the Boom Pod. One of fondest memories is on the return flight from my first TDY after I re-enlisted off the street (I had a 22 month break in service) in 1995 I crawled down into the boom pod right before we crossed the Missouri River in South Dakota. I then saw the open pit gold mine at Deadwood/Lead SoDak, Devils Tower, the Southern Bighorn Mountains and then we followed US HWY 16 through Worland WY and over the old motel/remodeled apartment building that we lived in. After I saw the Grand Tetons I could not feel my feet because they were frozen so I crawled back up to the cargo compartment and tried to find a place to get my feet up so they would thaw out a bit. I've seen Northern Iraq and Southern Iraq up to the huge lake to the Northwest of Baghdad, as well as the Nile River delta where it meets the Med. I've been to both coasts as well as the gulf of Mexico and Alaska a couple of times. I was able to take a self guided walking tour of NYNY and it only cost us $5 for the return train ticket at the end of the day... of course this does not include the money spent in NYNY, but the trip to and from the city only cost us $5 each due to getting a free ride down by showing our ID's to the Conductor. I was also lucky enough to be able to set foot on 4 out of the 7 continents and was able to get drink/get drunk on 3 of the 4. I actually hated it when I heard that "my" boom was going to be refueling an F-4... the air refueling receptacle on the F-4 was right at the minimum tolerance and the boom nozzles had a habit of sticking in them. It was so bad that we used to grease the end of the nozzle with petrolatum to lube everything up. I missed a lot of time with my daughter, so when she told us that she wanted to go deer hunting with her bow next (this) year, I kept my eye out for an economical used bow and scored a Reflex Grizzly for $90 on New Years Day... I spent more on my mechanical release! I'm looking forward to building a small "enclosed"/sheltered target backstop so we can practice all summer long. I grew up around firearms and have hunted off and on my whole life, well at least since I was 11 or 12 but I never had a bow. My daughter was pretty much a natural shot with the bows she tried at 4H mini-congress and other events so when she said she wanted a bow, we purchased a Diamond Infinite Edge for her. Cheers, Oly
love hearing old war stories and some of extra curricular activities as well while off duty lol, I tried to get my dad to write a book before he passed but could never get him to do it...
401k and a couple other long term investments. I own a golf course (with zero debt) and a pest control business (with zero debt in 3 years). When I'm ready, willing and unable to do it anymore I will turn the key and sell one or both. I'm at least dumping the golf course and walking away with a good chunk of money. I may or may not keep the pest control going in a semi retire kind of mode. If all else fails, I plan on winning powerball sometime soon.
