I need an upgrade to my clothing layering system...although I won't be needing it for a while. I use UA Coldgear for my base and I have insulated pants and a great jacket. I need a middle layer for cold weather. Any suggestions?
I use a windstopper fleece. Its warm and stops the wind great. Most of the time late season my base layer and the fleece are all I need to walk in and out. It can be a little too warm if worn for anything else.
Depends on the weather. Milder days it's a Cabelas Legacy fleece with wind shear, then my ASAT 3D on top. A bit colder, I add a Predator Fleece on top.
ScentBlocker S3 Expedition Weight Merino Wool. Greatest layer garment ever made IMO. And for those non-carbon guys, this is a non-carbon garment. It only has antimicrobials to help prevent scent. It's light weight, can be worn comfortably against the skin if need be, and is super warm. http://www.bowhunting.com/shopping/Products/Exp-Weight-Wool-Shirt-S3-Blk-Xl__01084.aspx
If it's under 32degrees I wear: Scent Lok base layers, then a set of thermals, followed by fleece sweat pants and a fleece hoodie and then my top layer which is either Scent Blocker fleece or a heavy 1 piece(depending on how cold it is). I also wear a thin set of Scent Lok socks and a set of thicker socks over them with 1200gram boots.
Can't underscore the above comments enough... except to say that I've got two pairs of the heavyweight set as well as two pairs of the middleweight stuff as well... best layering stuff on the market, IMO.
All Sitka. Bottom: Core bottoms 90% Pants Top: Core Crew Celsius Vest 90% Jacket If it gets real cold I might add a flannel. You spend alot for sitka but for hunting out west it's top of the line.
I just layer in fleeces as the weather gets progressively colder. I never where big bulky cold weather gear.
Maybe it's just me, but I never found the UA Cold Gear to be all that warm. It works well when I'm shed hunting in the spring and I'm walking a lot, but for sitting on stand I always thought it sucked. Sinced I switched to the Merino Wool I doubt I'll ever buy any Under Armor stuff again.
Who needs layers? I just go Cherokee-style in my buckskin briefs and some body paint. Clothes are for wimps. (But seriously, I agree with Justin... I am NOT a fan of the Under Armor stuff for cold weather. There is much better stuff out there, and I've found the house brand mid-layer and under-layer stuff from Eastern Mountain Sports to be awesome. It's not camo, but it's warm and scent resistant and lasts for years.)
