Family friend moved here from Ireland to start a contracting business with the end goal of saving enough to sell a good portion to his partner and move back to Ireland and start a tuna sport fishing business. Well, eventualy all went as planned, he bought one of the most high tech boats (sonar, GPS, all the works) and planned to start his new business in Ireland. Along comes a large oil company that will not be named, offers to pay for the use of his boat for $1000 per day... and now for the kicker... they pay for it whether it sits in the dock all year or if they use it 7 days a week, he collects $1000 a day regardless as long as he doesn't use that boat. I want that job please, I can find plenty of things to do with $1000 per day to use towards another hobby.
I'd say my dream job will be the day I'm working for myself. I'm not sure what that will be yet, but I'd be 100% satisfied with a small business that provides enough for my family and keeps me challenged and occupied. It doesn't have to be something high tech or flashy either for me to be happy. With that said, I'd say my current job is about as close as I can get while working for someone else. I'm directly in control of my own income based on my performance and I get to work with a fantastic team of people, the culture here is awesome. I'm learning a ton about business and management that I can apply to my career for the rest of my life. The only thing I'm currently missing and want is to run my own business. I'm pretty passionate about my current job, but I think I would enjoy the work even more if I were 100% in control of my own business. I'm hoping my current venture will put me in the position to either start or buy my own business in the future............that's what I'll consider myself as having my "Dream Job".
Matt - He's very close to my family property in Bradford County. Bradford County has more than 1,800 wells with about 500 of those producing gas commercially.......more than any other county in the state. Yes, there are a lot of people making sick amounts of $$$ up there, but only if the well is on their property. As of last fall, more than 160 million in royalties had been paid in the county and they only started drilling in about 2008.
haha not cheap at all. And all leased out. Id say around $6000-8000 an acre without mineral rights. Well over 10,000 for 50/50 on the mineral rights. No clue for full rights, I wouldnt even try to find that currently, way over priced. Its a different world up here these days. When my parents moved up they only paid around $3000 per acre with full rights.
A recent appraisal we had done landed @ $10k an acre without gas/mineral rights. I got my 26 acres in 2005 for just under $1k an acre.........
Thats better then a gas lease lol. You made out better then my parents. They came up Jan on 2008. Literately just before all this hit. They first heard about it in May that same year. They were stuck in a crappy lease and by the time that ended and they could resign, the rush was over and it was harder to make out good. So they are sitting back and waiting. They should be fraccin a well across the valley soon and if its good like it should be, theyll wanna drill this direction so were waiting them out.
Wow, for a second there I thought cmonsta was out west like the other poster who mentioned the $50k/acre. Anyways, yeah I'm very familiar with the natural gas play. I've been in company meetings, part of negotiation committees for pipeline ROWs, and have literally watched this boom in front of my eyes since 2008 (over $209 million in royalties paid out in Lycoming county as of this summer, Matt:D). I'm part owner of 1200 acres that has 6 wells being drilled, and 6 others that include part of us as unit, and another 5 off the property included in our unit. I don't expect anywhere near that money. My brother in law and sister and law have been receiving royalties for about a year and a half, and the decline curve is relatively steep, but definitely good money. I can see the money in Bradford since most landowners are MASS landowners. You need the 100+ acres completely covered in a unit, with gas prices hanging in the $3.00/mcf, but yeah I could see the initial surge resulting in those rates until it's throttled back or hits the decline curve. Regardless, royalty checks are coming, but notice how I certainly didn't include that in my dream job:D Realistic expectations, realistic expectations. Very happy for those northern landowners, though.
I want to be on the best Pro Staff in the hunting industry. Wherever that is, that's where I want to be.
I thought about you when I made this post. I had just finished watching a Rockhouse motion video (the Deliberate Life trailer) and that's what made me make the post. You don't plan to do video/photo work?
Too late for my dream job. I'm riding out what I do now until I retire. Hopefully in about 6 years. I like what I do and the pay is great ( I'm an Electrician), but I could have done better.
I don't want to work. Those that say they would get bored are either A) lying or B) don't have enough money. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy Pharmacy, but I got in this gig with the goal of retiring by 45 and actually enjoying life. Should be relatively easy if I stay focused.
I dont want much, just to be able to not work, yet get paid. I mean a comfortable $100 K a year with no debt. Thats not asking too much, yeah?
When you get older, you may change your mind on that. I once hunted on a 300+ acre piece of property in Crittenden county(awesome spot) The man that owned it was in his 80's at the time.He retired from Whirlpool in his early 50's and bought this farm as his dream job and raised a few head of cattle. He told me once to work as long as you can. He said he missed going to work. I found it odd at the time but the older I get,the more I kinda see what he was saying. I don't plan on working past when I can get my SS and 401 but, I can see where those people are coming from. I also worked with a person that was well into retirement age and he had PLENTY of money to retire. Some would consider him rich. He saved his whole life to retire early and set things up so he could. When he got close to that age,his wife and life time partner died of cancer and he had no one to share retirement with,so he stayed working for years after he could have quit. I really don't have a dream job at this point in my life. I'm pretty content with my job and the pay is sufficient.Money has never really been my main motivator.(but it is nice to have) If I were to hit the lotto(which I don't play) I might open a true PRO shop. I doubt I would make money at it,just would like to provide the service the way I feel it needs to done. I would not want it to be my source of income, more of a hobby than anything.
It's not ours yet, but it's there as i write this. My wife and I are working hard to build a house, be debt free, start a family, and be good stewards of all that The Lord has blessed us with and someday we won't have to work.
Doubt it. LOL I love my line of work, but I do it to earn a living to do the things I TRULY love doing.
Yeah, I was being completely sarcastic. Eventually I would like to enjoy the same success of guys like Rockhouse, Mammoth, Gnarly Bay, etc. That would absolutely be my dream job. I'm nowhere close to doing what those guys do and make the money they make, but I'm very confident in my skills and abilities, and am happy with the progress I've made and the path I'm on right now. People keep telling me to get a real job and that I can't do this for a living, and that there is enough to keep me going at this point. BTW, The Deliberate Life Trailer was beautiful. Can't wait to check out the entire film. Not to hijack the thread, but have you seen Mammoth's 2013 Reel? Good stuff from them as always.
It's ok, it's my thread, I don't mind:D Yeah I saw that new reel as well. Those guys do amazing work. I will also echo Trevor's sentiments as my wife is a pharmacist. While she certainly enjoys it, many (including her) went into the profession knowing, if you're smart, it will allow you to enjoy life.
