Thinking about how the hunting industry is evolving quickly what are you thoughts on synthetic scents? I have been reading about Buck Fever and started to brainstorm if this is the route we will be taking over the next couple of years in regards to scents. With the benefits such as long lasting shelf life and ease of quality control it seems this would be the new big thing?!? Any thoughts?
I just don't trust science enough. Not that they can't break down molecules, but that they can match nature. Most "real" estrous scents are from artificially induced estrous cycles. I just don't buy it anymore. I'm skeptical of a lot of things. Camo, scents, cover scents and the works. We buy what we see and smell fools us, multiply that by a million and a I couldn't even imagine what a deer smells downwind. Calls, I think those are the best attractant out there. I've never heard a doe or fawn bleat in the woods, heard a buck or two but know that by watching them I've never spooked them using a call. I know I've grunted a young buck a time or two, and have seen enough on rattling to buy into it.
I have used synthetic scent in scrape drippers and for whatever reason, the stuff flat out works. I have countless trail cam pics to prove it. Now the real urine scents. I have buddy who works for a large deer farm. They have on occasion bottled deer urine there for Penn State University research. What he told me was that even the estrous urine smelled nothing at all like the junk we buy in the store. He commented that it didn't have the pungent odor but rather a mild sweet smell to it when fresh and only got pungent after it sat for a while. That pretty much told me what I needed to hear about the real deal we buy in the bottle. In other words we're all paying $10 an ounce for ammonia.
I have been reading this as well. I am going to be using buck fever sythentics as well. Made a large order and plan on using it on all my mocks and see what shows up on cams to see if it draws more action. Thanks for your input.
