yeah i see nowhere near 150. good deer but it takes a big 8 to get 150. i have a 148 8 on my wall and hes much larger then the deer in the pic.
After looking at the pic when Covey posted it turned I think I am a little low. Like I said before though it is a beautiful buck. I hope you guys het a chance at him so we know for sure.
145 is my guess + or - 5 inches due to velvet shrink-- Heck of an 8 point g1 8 7 g2 8 8 g3 8 7 spread 20 Beam 22 21 m1 5 5 m2 4.5 4.5 m3 4.5 4.5 m4 4 4 84 + 61 = 145 For comparison only--- this was a 158 8 pt this buck was right at 160 out of velvet
Covey, I agree with you on some of the measurements, but you really think that deer has main beams that long? I was thinking closer to 24, 25 maybe.
guys lets not forget that the thing is still in velvet.. it will shrink, but on the other hand if i saw that thing while I was hunting i would just fall right out of the tree that is one monster buck and would be a record in my book for sure! Don't worry about scores though man, if he tickles your fancy and gets your heart racing when he comes in than lay him down good! best of luck to you
It's really impossible to tell from only one frontal shot. I was basing that partially off of being as fair to the deer as possible and also off of two deer I have here in front of me, one has a 28, 27" set of mains with only a 14" inside spread and the other has a 19" inside spread but has two 27" mains. The buck in question's mains are going to depend on how much they sweep back before the first curve and how far they extent out over his snout. That's most of the reason I allowed 10" from the 160" down to the 150". Still I think we have it narrowed down really close between all of us. I can live with mid to upper 140's from one frontal shot. Mass is also a big question with velvet. I also have no idea where in the country this deer is located. That could make a huge difference. In Texas that deer might be 125 while in Sask Ca, he might be 180 just because of the fact we have to judge antler based on an idea we each have based on key "average" measurements of parts like ear length, ear spread and eye width. I took this pic and overlay-ed this threads deer over it and resized to match up eyes and ears and it was easy to see how he could easily be 150"+ deer but thats also assuming their body sizes are relatively close. This deer was a 194" gross deer officially measured and submitted (just off the net).
I know...talking 44" more than this threads buck and it's not obvious in the overlay...says a lot about the buck in this thread. It should be a fair comparison as long as their key features are aligned. The record buck had 30, 32" mains and mass isn't vastly different...width is close and this threads buck has better brows.
I wish there were different pics. It just feels like that being a frontal shot and so close to the camera throws me off some. I still see that deer as being high 140s, low 150s. I think a side shot back away from the camera would clear things up quite a bit.
I think this buck ^ is a very good comparison... I am tempted to bump my original guess of 146 up to maybe 152; but I will stick with my first impression just because I am stubborn. The OPs buck has fairly significant dimorphism. The right side antlers are really, really impressive. The left side is quite a bit smaller (but still impressive.) If the left side matched better; I'd say this was an easy 160" and maybe even 165" 8 point. But it looks to me that the left side is a good 8-12" smaller. Obviously this is all in fun...I wish the BHOD crew did a "guess this score" sticky and could track guesstimates and actual scores at the end of every season. Would be interesting.
You're right that left side is weaker than the right, I couldn't tell how much but I allowed some for the smaller side, probably not enough. That left main could be several inches shorter for sure. I do feel he's got better main beam length/inside spread than the one BHH posted, while his tines are not as long his brows are better too.
This is a great buck but I think he is south of 150. Mass is decent but the tine length and symmetry isn't there.
lol...are you trying to get me to bump my guess up to 152? That's exactly the reason I am tempted to go higher than 150.
Covey---Do you really think that buck has 25 inch beams? I just didn't see them being more than 21 or so. Seriously---It's fun guessing scores once bucks get that big.. Once they pass 140 in my book they are a bonofide toad!
