What's the maximum distance you'd shoot at a deer?

Bryan, this is a typical eastern treestand view. How far could you should from this? :)

It all depends where I am, last year I was spotting and stalking on a field, dropped a doe at 55 yards. In the mountains, I'll shoot out to 65. But down south, 90% of my shots are within 35 yards.

I also practice at 60 yards nearly every day, and I think that's really really essential. If I'm comfortable with 60, 40 is a breeze!

Damn. That is beautiful!!! But yea. I see why. The pine forest where I live is nothing but big old pine and some acorn trees. Typicaly easy 70 clear shots in all directions. There is no reason to even practice long range where your at.

My longest kill to date is 43 yards on a whitetail, I'm comfortable shooting ot to 60 with the right wind.

Where I come from (southern NY) fields rarely exist. My average hunting spot is 10-25 acres. also I have never encountered a calm deer. Target shoot to 70 daily. 35 is pushing it in the stand

I took that pic last fall around late October/Early November in SW PA state forest. This has become one of my favorite spots, but some other places I hunt are more open with larger old growth trees. The farm in Ohio has two stands on field edges that allow for long shots, but the deer almost always feed their way close so we just wait them out.

Thats nice. Yea where im at. you have everything against you. steep hills, open, and not much cover. This morning i was scouting for bear, and 3 buck walked across the trail in front of me at about 60 yards. I ducked down and got my Binoculars out to see how big they were. they circled to my left and got to about 40 yards. but man o man, thats the closest i ever get to a buck. there would have been no way to sneak in on those guys. they knew i was there but couldnt figure what i was. 1 more month and one of those bad boys will be in my freezer.
I think one of the reasons I dont get those closes shots you guys get. is i like to spot and stalk. Im not a fan of fishing, and sitting in a tree stand or blind seems a lot like fishing to me. I like to be moving.

Sorry, but I have no idea what your comment is in reference to.

I used AJ's quote as a joke because it was jibberish.

I would easily sling an arrow at a doe 50+ yards but confidently 40

    You beat me to it.

Also wondering about the confidence level past 40 since 40 was the confident level.

I've been more nervous watching a buck through trees than a doe, but once I know I am going to shoot given the chance, I don't think I am calmer buck or doe

My shots are a little more shacky past 40 yards and even more shaky when I'm shooting a mature buck I'd rather miss a doe than a buck but anything up to forty yards is meat on the ground

    "Cross gun"

Never heard the term "CROSSGUN" - I like it. I will have to use on those I know who hunt with one. 30 yards for me.

If its dead calm, Ill go out to 45 yards and I hold myself to it even though im confident much past that.
