John is absolutely right, beans and corn is expensive though and you need a LOT of land because they don't produce a lot of forage per acre. If you don't have the $$$ for fertilizer and equipment for corn and beans, I'd suggest planting seperate strips of 3-4 different types in each plot, so that you can always have a food source available through all 4 seasons. I planted clover/chicory mix, a mixed brassica (had good luck with Biologic Maximum and Tecomate Ultra Forage), and a brassica/turnip mix (had good luck with Biologic Full Draw). I did this with a 1.25 acre plot split into even thirds, and had food from May until early March.
We have quite a bit of acreage in alfalfa so I didn't bother with any clover this year. We planted about an acre in turnips this year and once the first real hard frost hit the deer went nuts for it. Perfect food plot if you want the deer on it when the season is in. It also gives them some good late season feed.
We planted 3 acres of sorghum and Eagle Soybeans this year. Deer and birds loved it. Milo was gone before late season b/c the birds just devoured it. This year we're planting a brassica's plot for and soybean/corn plot. We have acres of Ladino planted between all our rows of trees that the deer were tearing up during the late season too.
