I see those hunting shows and just wonder, if they would be hunting the area I do, they would never kill a deer. They just don't get to be that big in my area. I hunt around a area riddled with roads, and extreme amount of coyotes, and people that injure deer. The deer just don't get a chance to mature or get big. The biggest deer around my area is around 130-140, but I probably won't get a shot at him, its more likely that I will either shoot a doe, or a buck with a really messed up rack, and I'm fine with that as long as I have venison for the freezer, but I ask you what is the typical type of deer that you actually have in your area?
If im lucky 170. More realistically unless I screw up 130-140 Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
We manage our deer like crazy but are averge deer that we see are those 15in 8 points. I have saw bigger deer and have a lot on camera but the ones that sow themselves in light are lil guys
I think "typical deer" and "largest deer you have a chance at" are two very different things. In most areas the typical buck is going to be 1 or 2 years old. However that's rarely the largest deer in the area. I know for a fact that there's 170+ inch deer in the areas I hunt so in theory I could have a shot at one of them. However it's much more likely that I shoot a deer in the 130-140 range, which is perfectly fine with me.
Mostly likely forms it is. 125 inch deer max but mostly just a. Lot of does in my area Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
My brother gets pics of a 160+ atleast once every couple years. Hunting around here you never know what is going to step out.
Some deer from my area can get between 130-160. I hear at least a handful of stories from guys every year putting down big bucks nearby. The biggest buck I've ever seen on the hoof in my area was in my front yard, he was probably around 130. I'd say shooting a buck that is between 100 and 115 is a realistic possibility every season.
Usually 120"-130", 3.5 year old deer are the best I'll get on trail cam pics, but a few years ago a guy shot a 180"10 pointer that no one in the area knew existed. I also once found a huge bodied deer with his skull cut off (poached the night before, I heard the gunshot) that was aged by a biologist at either 6.5 or 7.5 yrs old, he was not 100% sure, but either way I assume he was pretty big. No one ever saw that deer either. So it is impossible for anyone to answer your question with any certainty, and really, a big part of the allure of hunting is that unknown.
I undershot a 160'ish by 3" last year. Where I hunt I'm at the mercy of travel corridors so the rut is my only option and you never know what it will bring. There's a lot of big deer were I hunt, but its a game of chance and chances are I won't see the biggest and will probably miss the biggest I see. But I'm still gonna go anyway, cause you just never know
This is exactly what I was going to answer. A P&Y class deer will most likely cause me to draw my bow. It is my last year hunting a piece of property that I have hunted for 10 years. The last 7 years the other bow hunting neighbors in the area and I have followed some unofficial guidelines of not taking a buck under 130"...can't say that about my family who gun hunts the property though. Heck, I can't even brag about following those guidelines. I took 2 bucks over that timeframe that were 115-120", but made ME really happy to harvest! The biggest I have had on camera were 3 different bucks (2 in WI, 1 in IL) that all were estimated at a little over 180". I have not had anything over 140" on camera in WI for about 4 years now since the EAB rules have relaxed. When they were in place we were getting a lot of pics of those big boys!
Here in Mid Michigan there is so many hunters that the deer just don't get big. If you shoot one over 100" its nice, but I missed a big one in bow and my Cousin shot it opening day of rifle it was 120". And the neighbor down the road shot one 130. So I would say the typical deer is about 100" and biggest is 140"?
For the past few years all my big boys are around 130-140 last year I took 1 of them at 142" and this year there is 2 that are around the same. I have lots of day time photos all over the place of them,. So every year I come to expect the 130-140 range. As for the biggest as said before you never know but the biggest 1 killed in my county with a bow was just under 200" and that's what gets me out of bed at 4am with single digit temperatures. The largest I have seen is pushing 150.
On our farm in MO, the biggest deer I've taken was a 154". The biggest deer I've ever seen here was probably in the 160's. On average, the buck I'm targeting is 130-140 on our farm. There have been 170+ deer taken in the area I hunt in MO, but it's very rare. Where I hunt in IL, I've got pics of bucks pushing 170 or better. There's a good possibility I'll have encounters with 140" or greater deer throughout the season, which is all I hope for. However, a couple years ago, there was a 196" taken there, so there's a chance I could have an encounter with a 200-inch deer. Not holding my breath but keeping my fingers crossed.
Welll...i know of a 199" and a 217" that were killed "around" in the last 5 years. The biggest ive seen this year is 125"
I don't have much I'd like to put my tag on this year. Lots of bucks I'd like to see walk or have family members take instead. I've been fortunate to take 4 bucks over 150 in the last 4 years so I'd like to hold to those standards. They are out there, but none that have been spending a lot of time crossing paths with our cams. Breaking up of bachelor groups and the run may change things. If not I will look for an old bruiser and some does.
Bullwinkle the moose. Public land wet foggy morning (perhaps not yet legal shooting light) just above freezing. busted the beast at 20 yards bedded on the bottom of a knoll. I honestly don't know who was startled more me or the buck. when he rose, vapor shot out of his nose like a steam engine. it was a mystical experience...perhaps not unlike the visions experienced by native americans. Saw him twice more during an all day stalk...I had to give up the hunt, as I was wet, hypothermic and could not stop shaking. He may not have made the record book, but he was one of the most beautiful creatures God has ever created. I have never killed a big buck, but like to believe that the experience has bonded me with the spirit of deer, and that some day I will bag a buck worthy of that special animal.
