I want to get my son into archery, what brand and type of bow would be best to start him on? He's 5 years old and the size of a 7yr old.

mission craze hands down. goes from 15-70 pounds without changing the limbs. He will be able to use it for however long he wants.

The bow I have is super adjustable. Diamond Infinite Edge. Draw weight from 5 - 70 pounds. Draw Length from 13 - 30 inches. For $350 it comes ready to hunt. Just buy arrows and broadheads.

you could take a look at the genisis. no back wall so no need to readjust when he gets older. Not sure what the weight is on these but we have a whole bunch of them at our club so we can teach local kids groups

Like SLINGnMISS said the genisis bows are great for young kids to get into it, my 6 y/o cousin has one and shoots it with no problems. As soon as my little girl gets big enough she'll have one!

Easy guys, those are big money bows.

Start off with the bear brave II. You can get it at walmart or some pro shops (mine has them). They are cheap, like $50, for the whole kit.

At least this way you can see if he keeps interested without getting deep in the pockets.

My girls just turned 5. They have a brave bow and love to shoot. I had to go to the longbow style so they could pull it themselves though. Of course I had to get the pink carbon express arrows from walmart. I have $35 in their entire setup. It works perfect and if they give it up in a month, I'm not really out anything.

The mathews genisis is our next step, maybe. They're still $200. It would be different if our school district had an archery team, but they do not.

You make a valid point there, they are pretty pricey!

I got my kids longbows made out of PVC pipe to see if they'd get into it. They love it and want to shoot with dad. I think we'll get them the Bear's from Wal-Mart or Cabela's for Christmas this year.

I highly recommend a light poundage recurve. They have them as low as 5# and 10#

Do not worry about them getting stronger and bump weight on them. Let them learn to shoot and enjoy the sport.

They (recurves)are much simpler and a better training tool than a compound. At that early age they can learn without knowing they are learning while still enjoying the sport of archery.

With compounds, they run the risk of bad habits creaping in that can stay with them for a lifetime if they don't learn how to correct them.
