Whatever happened to BDU Woodland camo? I'm not a "camo pattern guy" per se. That is, I really couldn't care less if my camo matches or which pattern I'm wearing. I'm also not saying that the current camo offerings suck, because they all work just as good as the next. In fairness and for the purposes of this conversation, I have to admit that I'm not the kinda guy who will be wearing realtree AP to dinner or accessorizing my vehicle with mossy oak magnets and mudflaps. Now that we've got that out of the way, I'm just sayin' that BDU Woodland Camo looks totally badass, and I wish more manufacturers would have more product lines that featured plain old Woodland camo. Especially for things like bows, arrows, gloves, hats, UA-style Baselayers, etc. I'm not looking for a Woodland Camo jumpsuit or anything, so let's not get carried away. I've had a few Woodland camo t-shirts, and I wore those bad boys out. My favorite hunting hat is a Woodland Camo Pittsburgh Pirates hat. Am I the only guy who has this fixation with old-school camo? It should also be noted that BDU Woodland camo (as far as I know) is not the intellectual property of anyone, which makes it FREE. I.E. - lower consumer costs. That's why you'll hardly ever see anyone on TV sporting BDU camo - because companies like Realtree & Mossy Oak have a financial interest in promoting their camo and generating massive cashflows.
Maleko - I think you're right, but I've always called it BDU camo. I think it's technically called Woodland Camo or something. A special shoutout goes to the Dukemichaels Beanie. Badass. .
I have a couple of sets of BDU woodland camo. It is old but I still wear it each year from time to time.
My all time favorite pair of hunting pants were 6 pocket BDU woodland camo. Bastage borrowed them and never returned them.
I miss the old woodland camo as well. That being said, I still have a pair of cotton desert BDU's circa 1990.
still have a set from right before we switched to the digital ACU uniforms. too bad they did not design the woodland camo with the design of the acu. i do use the new multicam pattern and it works great.
If anyone is wondering, bdu stands for battle dress uniform, and the desert bdu's you are referring to are called dcu's(desert combat uniform). I guss the only reason you don't see it much anymore is because the army got rid of it, and clothing companies like to emulate what the military does. Look at sitka with the digital pattern, looks an awful lot like the acu's I wear everyday. That being said, I do like the old bdu's, and I would like to see them make a comeback.
Take a trip to your nearest Army Surplus store, and you should find all the woodland camo you would ever need.
I don't want Woodland Camo on old-ass Army surplus gear! I want it in 2011 Under Armour and plastered on my bow/arrows! I want NEW products in old-school camo!
Where quiksilver jumped the shark: Don't get me wrong, I've got a pair of BDUs in the closet and they get worn occasionally. It still has a very limited usefulness because it has such strong dark colors. The picture above illustrates this really well.
Here you go Quickie, 9,387 items of the stuff. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...&_nkw=woodland+camo&_sacat=See-All-Categories T
BDU (Battle Dress Uniform) they still issued these when I joined and I still use them to hunt. I Heart BDU! ACU (Army Combat Uniform) Not so good for hunting. OCP (Operation Enduring Freedom Camoflouge Pattern) Probably good for hunting in some places. I'll be trying it when I get the chance.
I just had to go and dig up an old pic from 1984 or 85. I'm the first one on the left and this is right before I headed out to bow hunt.
Theres a reason its not used anymore. I use my Multi-cam stuff when I hit the woods. It has more depth and breaks up better. Still no substitute for using natural foliage that exitsts around you to conceal and break up your outline.
Awesome picture, Tony. I used to have an army surplus Woodland Camo insulated jacket - the real heavy one. I remember one night going coon hunting with a buddy and we killed 4 coons. 2 really nice boars. This was back before the time when I skinned my furbearers at the kill site. Well, I lugged two coons home (slung over my shoulder), not realizing that the biggest boar's head was bleeding out all down my back. I wound up with a permanent brown bloodstain on my jacket that made me look like a homicidal juvenile delinquent. "Taggart" was the name on the coat. Back to the original topic - I'm convinced that my bow would look totally awesome if it was coated in Woodland Camo. But y'all are definitely right, the browner shade is 100% better for a hardwoods setting - something more like the gray/brown shades of "Outfitter Camo." This guy had the right idea: But then again, I'm 100% convinced that camo shades and patterns really don't make all that much difference. You could bowhunt in a green/brown flannel shirt with similar results. Most guys who get busted by a whitetail either get winded, heard or caught moving. Your camo pattern isn't going to help you in any of those situations.
