I also just got a Barnett. I didn’t want to spend tons of money so went with the hyper tac 420. This will be my first season hunting with a x-bow but love the way it shoots. Super fast and very accurate. Great piece for the money. I have a feeling things are gonna die in a few days here. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Gotta agree with you there. I've used a lighter bolt to shoot faster, but now I use a Barnett Whitetail Pro STR. It's a heavy bow, shoots 22" and I use 100 grain Rage for about a 380? (Might be wrong here, I'll check and come back) Grain payload. A heavier payload has a harder hit, and less recoil than a lighter arrow. So, while maybe faster, possibly louder 'twang' resulting in the deer ducking the string, so it's maybe a coin toss. I used to experiment a little more, but now I go with the manufacturers suggested payload. And for me, thats a min of 380 grain including a 100 grain broadhead, (so 280 grain minimum bolt) and if I want to go a little heavier, I'll buck up to a 125 gr. broadhead. But that's just me.
Barnett Whitetail Pro STR, 22" Elong Outdoor Recruit 8.8mm bolts 100 grain Rage Skorpion High Performance Bowstring Fluid and Rail Lube Stock scope Great xbow, quiver blows chunks, I secure it in my pack Edit my payload is around 425
Barnett Ghost 420. Eastman aluminum XX75Mag bolts 22". NAP spitfire Edge 100gr serrated 1.75" cut. Total bolt weight 480grs. I shoot across a hayfield sometimes 75 yrds. Killed 26 deer with this rig in 12 years. Nice big body 9 pt this year at 77yrds. Blows right thru them everytime. Massive blood trails. Never go farther than 30/35yrds. I like a heavy bolt for KE/penetration. jmho. "FNG" Rob
I have Ravin 29X great xbow. The only down site is it was expensive but it should last. Slick Trick and Magnus stinger does it for me. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
last 2 seasons I hunted exclusively with a crossbow, PSE Fang 350 XT its not terribly fancy but works just fine, using Scheels store branded bolts with lighted nocks with NAP Spitfire heads. Finally got my elbow fixed, surgery end of last season and will be starting to shoot my compound bow again soon and if all goes well there I'll be back to hunting with it.
