this guy has been haunting my dreams for the last 2 years. this picture is from last year and after i got it, he disappeared until muzzleloader season. this past weekend a buddy saw him bedded down in a meadow along a river at about 5pm. i already have a stand along the path he seems to take from there to the acorns and where he crosses the river to get to the corn, and he has a couple young trees all rubbed up. he's gained mass since this picture and now has a kicker coming off one of his g-2's. he seems to be eating during the night and coming back to bed down late morning. the stand is only about 100yds from the bed he was in, is this too close to his bedding area or does it seem safe to hunt it?
You can hunt in the bedding areas as long as the wind is right and hit your target. If you miss him, by means of a bad shot, then he'll be gone 4 ever. I am hunting 10 feet south of my bucks bedding area. It’s thick with 2"3" trees so he can’t see me, but I have views of two of his trails. I can't hunt north because it’s on a property line and I am not that type of hunter. Good luck and play the wind my friend.
100 yards is getting pretty close to me. Id say stay away from his actual BED, and hunt his travel routes in and out of the his bedding area. Just because he was bedded down in one spot, doesnt mean he will be bedded down in that same spot again. The same general area, most likely.
Like said above, wind is going to be a big factor. Stay where you are, but really play the wind. And for god's sake, shoot straight!! Good Luck!
i was planning on playing the wind for sure. no promises on the shoot straight! for god's sake i hope i do, but i'd be lying if i said there wasn't a slight chance i would pull an "excited new puppy" and pee all over myself.
