Just out of curiosity, and partially to see just how badly I'm abusing this perk:p, if you guys had your summers off, as we teachers do, what would you do with your time? Vacation? Fish? Home remodeling? Find a second job? Nothing?:D In all honesty, I work harder in the summers than I do teaching. Sure, I vacation, and sleep in on days when I'm really beat (that's a big plus, but rare), but the past two summers have found me spending most of my days remodeling my house, and doing a lot of manual labor (just finished pouring a little over 5 yards of concrete this morning, and 4 on Tuesday morning which proceeding lots of hand excavating, building 80+ft of retaining walls). Sometimes I wonder if I'm not utilizing a good thing, you know? So, if you had the time off, what would you do?
I would fish...a lot. By a lot I mean 3-4 days a week would be good. I would take my kids "up north" and fishing more. I might get a few things done around the house. Get a part time job if I needed the money, which I probably would. And probably do some fishing.
I'd do a spreadsheet..... 1. How much can I make with another PT job? 2. How much would the home improvements I wanted to do cost if I did them? 3. How much would the home improvements I wanted cost if I contracted them out? 4. What's the +/delta? It's naturally going to be a big delta, if you don't work and contract the work. I'd then weigh this against what I felt like my free time (to my psyche) was worth to me and my family. I wouldn't sell this step short, either.
I'd have a 50K+ sq ft garden. Run bowfishing tournaments. Teach bowfishing to women and kids. Volunteer 40 hours at a park pulling weeds and whatnot. More volunteer work. Shoot fish. Raise chickens. ....... oh wait. I do that already... I don't know what I'd do with myself if I had the 'summer off'.
i'd like to do a bunch of work on my place but i dont wanna act like having the summer off would mean i'd do it.... i cant believe i just busted myself! i would fish and prob babysit my buddy's kids!!!! got them these brooms last year cause they were afraid of witches... even though thats what they can be sometimes ha!=-)
I'd either get a summer job or spend the entire time doing projects around the house. It's just too damn hot down here during the summer to do anything fun outside.
I'd do some contracting work for some extra cash, but it would be done on my schedule. I'd probably do 4 or 5 roofs and a siding job or two. I'd spend more time in a hammock with a book than I currently get to. I would have my wood supply in by August.(which I am sure you do Matt ) This would greatly differ if I had a good friend or two that was in the same position. In short, I'd balance out between some more work and some play. I think you are doing just that Matt. I'm glad I don't have the summer off for one reason only. I KNOW even with the extra jobs, I'd spend more money on both work (house stuff) and play.
Bowfish, golf and find a part time job thats doesn't take up the majority of my days off. Something like cutting and baling a couple days a week. If I owned my own home I'd most likely work on it a day or two a week (if it need remodeling)
A little fishing... not enough golf... and right now I'm planning a Mexican meal for when my brother and his wife return from Montana. In preparation I'm experimenting with different margaritas the next few days. Todays version is quite good. Todays was Tyler Florence's version. Tomorrow I'm doing the Barefoot Contessa's version. It's hell figuring out how to cut some of these recipes so I don't have to make a whole pitcher. And Dang.... when you use the good stuff a margarita is expensive to make. I guess I didn't need to use Grand Mariner but that's what the recipes want.
Home projects would get the majority of my time. I'd do more fishing as well, and I might even still be shooting 3D competitively. As of now, home projects have taken over the spare time. I'm really trying to put a dent in the list before bow season gets here.
I have been laid off since the end of May, suppose to go back in August sometime. 1. Drove from Minnesota to North Dakota to watch my son graduate from highschool. 2. Had a big Graduation party for my son when he came for the summer/ 3. Moved from our old house to our new house. 4. What time I have had left I spent either getting settled into the new house, or spending time at our camper. 5. Oh I forgot, went to the cities for a weekend to see my brother inlaw get married.
I'd look for a job that enabled me to be off in the fall! I'd do what i do now but just alot more of it. Fish, scout, trailcams and go on vacations
Not sure how guys do it (home remodeling that is) who work during the summer. I ALWAYS run out of time.
I did the whole summer thing off for 6 years as a special education teacher. I did not use it to my advantage as I was worked out 5-6 days a week like a madman. I am sure my wife just loved that I turned away her affection for the aromatic allure of sweaty men on a wrestling mat. FITZ---I have a guy that just started working with me that talks about ELY Minnesota. He talked about it having a lot of people who sustenance hunt, fish, and grow vegetables. Sounds pretty cool. So what is your take on Ely?
Since I retired and officially have every day "off", I find myself busier than when I still worked outside the home. At least then I had reasons not to do a lot of the stuff around the house. Now, I find myself working at tasks around our property and not being able to keep up. I guess when I go to teach military classes I consider that my time off.
