I worked cleaning stables, feeding and watering horses. They were all harness racers and it was right behind my house in high school.
Tom How long ago was that ?? Are they still racing them ?? They had a race track at the fair grounds in my hometown but the races died out in the 60's before I was old enough to go to them. Tim
I worked as a cart kid at a local golf course. Couldn't beat it. Didn't get paid much but made a decent amount of tips and got to play all of the golf I wanted.
First job was on a cattle ranch bout 400 head of black angus. I was a freshman in high school, 10 dollars an hour when i started. worked there all the way through high school. Loved it!
Working in our chicken houses and hay on the farm ~9. First on the book job was selling shoes 16. (I still won't let them lace shoes for me, that was a PIA when people tried on 15 pair and never bought any. )
Mowed lawns and shoveled sidewalks until I got my driver's license then delivered furniture and appliances making $2.25 an hour. About twice what I was worth. :D
First job for pay besides cutting grass was running chainsaw cutting firewood off of the piles from road-building/boat landing construction jobs = dirty logs. 12 years old and made 2.50 an hour and learned how to sharpen saws and not cut my boots open. Rode my bike 7 miles there in the morning and got picked up at the end of the 8 hour day when my Dad came back from work. Went on the books when I turned 16(when I could drive) and made 30$ a face cord from start to finish(felled trees, cut, split, delivered, & piled) filling contracts for the ski hill housing association. Husqvarna 272/272xp are what I ran and are still my favorite chainsaw to this day.
I worked in a lumber warehouse during the summers of college. I would work double shifts, so I usually worked about 90 hours a week, 7 days a week. Never had a day off during the summer. I would make about $1000/week though, so I would say it was a decent summer job. Working that much during the summer allowed me to not have to work while I was taking classes.
I did the usually country boy jobs like throwing hay. First real job was working for Seitz Foods. Night shift, clean up crew. Nothing like the smell of cooking raw hotdog batter with a steam hose! I lasted all of 4 nights on that job. Probably the best thing to ever happen to me. It payed really well, but I just couldn't handle working nights. It was pretty tough to go tell my future grandfather in-law that I couldn't hack it though, since he did get me the job. After that I worked for Payless Cashways building materials supply for about 5 years while going to college.
