Farm hand for an old farmer down the road a ways and on the weekends I would help his wife at antique shows. One summer I spent weeks chopping velvet leaf out of an 80 acre milo field by hand with a hoe. Lol. That was tough! The pay was pennies but I'll always remember the good food. Lunch on the Lepke farm was always hearty and delicious. 2nd job was a dishwasher at a local restaurant on the lake which ended up giving me a passion for fine food. I completed a degree in Culinary arts and worked as a chef for a few years before making a career change into management. First managing kitchens and bars. Now I am a production supervisor and program manager for an aerospace company. Funny how things change
My first job was working on a ranch. Basically spraying thistles and burning pasture. Cutting trees and making roads. Now I work construction while going to school. School sucks, but I love the construction.
I worked at Dominick's grocery store when I was 15. Was a fun job pushing carts around the parking lot all night but the minimal pay turned out to be almost nothing after I paid my union dues.
I grew up doing a variety of farm labor for relatives, my first actual job was when I joined the Army at 18.
If we're going back that far. 5th grade cleaning out cat kennels and feeding show cats everyday before and after school each day. .50 cents an hour Personalized License plates after that till 9th. Worked at my folks display showroom everyday After school till graduation then went to work full time the next day. Having a life never occurred to me until I was about 40. Trying to make up for it now.
I used to mow lawns when I was 12 up until I got my license. When I turned 16 I juggled my time working three jobs cleaning up a local bar before it opened for the next day. Got paid really good there 40-60 bucks cash for about 3-4 hours every weekend. Filled my tank for the week. I was also a bagged/ cart boy at the grocery store. When I turn 18 I became a waiter which paid for all my college tuition. Now I work from home after getting my first job out of school.
I was the pixie dust spreader on the Tilt-a-Whirl Then I barked for the Yak woman :P Real Answer: Dishwasher at a buffet at 17....
Newspaper delivery boy before age 14, then picking drop apples, cook and ran a trap line. Computer/Business work after college, except when I got engaged I took a second full time job as a cook again to pay for the ring and honeymoon.
Unofficial jobs... First one was probably picking the big stems and whatnot out of bales of marijuana. I was about 6. Then I was a waitress/busgirl/slave at my mom's restaurant from when I was 9-12. My whole summers were spent at the restaurant. I ran traps when I was in my early teens. Fur prices were pretty good back then. First 'official' job: Tele-survey taker when I was 16. Paid really good because it was a miserable job. I think it was about $8 an hour.
Ya it totally sucked. I didn't last long at that job because of that. They had a big turnover of baggers and cart staff because of it. Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2
My brother and I packed hay/clover in the iron frame work for making hay stacks at age 6. Spent all day jumping up and down on the hay as dad dumped it in. Once the hay piled to the top of the frame work... dad would have us climb on the hay fork of the tractor and let us down. He would finish piling and packing hay with the tractor hay fork. Pay was food on the table and clothes on our back. That and building character according to dad. We pitched **** from the barn soon as we could lift a pitch fork. Driving a John Deere B tractor for dad while him and big John Lee pitched hay bales on the hay rack when dad finally bought a small baler and got away from making hay stacks. I was 9. Raking hay with the JD B at 11. Mowing hay at 13. Working for my uncle on his farm working cattle was my first paying job. It wasn't very often as dad kept us busy but $5 - 10 a day from the uncle was like hitting the jackpot. I was 11 and worked for him once and a while until I left for college. At 14... I started trapping with dad's 4 traps. #1.5 long springs and I still have them. The furs of the first years catch paid for a 2 dozen #1.5 coil springs, 1 dozen #2 coil springs, 6 #110 conibears, 6 #120 conibears, 2 #220 conibears, 1 #330 conibears and all my trapping supplies. The next year's the furs paid for more traps and my spending money for the year. It was the first real serious cash I had ever made. Fur prices were real good all the way though high school. At 15... I picked up odd jobs early in the summer waiting on haying season with dad. I stained a deck for a couple in town, fixed fence for another lady and just landed a cozy job keeping some rich lady's yard up when dad made me quit to go hay. I made $3.50 an hour. My brother had gotten a job for a farmer so it just left dad and I to put up 8,000 small bales. Well I did all the mowing and raking. Dad baled hay when he got home from his job while I loaded hay racks by myself. We would unload them in the dark when we got home. Other then baling... I did most of the work until I left for college. Dad bought himself a big round baler when I went to college. Imagine that !!! So much for building his character. At 16... I got to work for the Soil Conservation while waiting for haying season. Their normal guy couldn't do it that year. I made $3.50 an hour and drove tractor while two ladies planted trees behind it in a two seat tree planter. That job went for 3 weeks. Man they could cuss when I would smoke a buried rock with the planter. I think we planted 60,000 trees in that 3 week time. While dad never paid me a wage... he bought my bow, rifles, shotgun and paid for all shells, arrows and gas so I could go hunting and trapping. I still think he got the better deal but he was a good dad. Wish he was still here to give him crap for my character building. Tim
Similar to this. I worked on a farm. Mainly mowing, weedeating, spraying invasives, fixing fence, building fence, bush hogging, etc. It was miserable at first, but I learned to love it.
First official job was a dishwasher at a country club/bar and grill making 8/hr, worked my way up to sauté chef after the first year making 11/hr. Was able to learn a lot from a boss/head chef that's going to prove useful in the future. I still love cooking but towards the end of that venture I really hated working on the line.
First job i got paid for was either helping my dad/uncle build houses/pole-barns or helping the local farmers bail hay/straw. Hated them both but hard labor is what you get at 13...making a measly $5/hr under the table. First job with a paystub and taxes? I worked at Marc Glassman Inc, also known as "Marcs" grocery stores in Ohio. Worked my way up to "Customer Service Supervisor" but kept getting in trouble for dating the cashiers...lol. I got demoted when i left for fire academy, and when i came back they put me in produce, where my best friend was the manager. We ran that place into the ground. I was making $8/hr. Now i work as a Paramedic full time. Its my calling. Ive already watched Lonesome Dove, Wild Wild West and The Replacements today. For the last 5 years ive been a Volunteer Firefighter as well. But thats not for the money. Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
