With the other "kid labor " thread in mind... has me wondering what you guys/gals and pansies drove for the first time. How old were you ??

I was 7 or 8. Dad had a 1959 Chevy Apache pickup. He was moving a swather home from the field and needed someone to follow him in the truck. I volunteered !! I had drove tractor before and was dieing to drive it. I wanted to drive it before my older brother did. :p

The was no power steering and the steering was shot on it. You had to over steer it something horrible just to keep it going straight. To stop you had to pump the brakes a few times fast and hard before you had pressure. It was gutless but we loved that pickup.

I remember the first time Dad let me drive his pride and joy... a 1970 Plymouth Fury. I stepped on the gas and spun out. It had a lot more power then the old Apache truck. Course I was use to over steering which was not a good thing in something new with power steering. We were all over the gravel road with dad hollering keep the steering wheel still. I was wondering what was wrong with it. Oh and the brakes were much better to. I know dad kissed the wind shield when I hit the brake the first time !! Didn't need to pump them that hard I guess.

    13 years old in a 1970 Chevy Nova SS 350 4-speed. It's how I became a gear head.

I was 13 in 1985 Chevy Pickup 4x4. 350 with a 4 speed with a bulldog gear. I always loved letting my friends drive it once I got into high school. They normally drove little 4 bangers with no power and had to take off in 1st. If you took off in low in this truck and gave it any kind of gas the front tires would come off the ground. Their eyes got big in a hurry.

Like you Tim, old farm truck. After following behind it as it idled thru the hay fields, doing slave labor stacking the trailer seven high with square bales. I got the privelege to drive it to the barn and do more slave labor unloading it. lol Don't even ask about the truck we used to haul the nights dead hogs to the dumpster with so the city kids dogs could have some all meat food. lol

Drove the John Deere Lawn tractor & and G'pa Fitz's Skidoo Elan by 7 & 8. First car was G'pa Hiley's Towncar up his 1/4 driveway at about 11 or so. Didn't learn to drive stick until I was 16, in Dad's '73 CJ 5. That was fun! ... still is :tu:

My dad was a great head in his hay day and turned it into a drag car to race at the great lakes drag strip. From that to my first truck 1982 suburban. Bad idea to let a teenage boy have that for his first vehicle lol

2wd '88 Ranger 5 speed, she was a jewel  I hit 4 deer with that thing, never did repair anything. Muffler falls off? Grab some bailing wire and wire it up there! I finally sold it to a kid that couldn't drive stick, and he blew it up in pretty short order.

I learned how to operate a clutch on a 95 Yamaha blaster. My first stick vehicle was a single cab 95 Chevy Silverado 3500 with a 454 and 5sp manual trans. I was a beast of a truck and I had some fun times with my friends in high school with that thing.

I forgot the name of it, but it was a little two door, red, pansy car. My dad used to use it on occasion to zip up to work because it had great gas mileage. It looked a pregnant rollerskate going down the road. One time I did something to the transmission and I lost reverse for a month. I was too scared to tell my dad and thank goodness one day it just started working again!

When I turned 16 the high school I was in was too poor to have a real driver's ed program so I had to wait until my senior year at a different HS to take behind-the-wheel. We had a couple of mid 80's Chevy Novas and a Chevette (no power steering or power brakes). Gutless cars.

What was awesome is our road driving was almost all speeding and playing on the ramps and cloverleafs of 90/290 and 94/294. During the lunch hour rush no less. Trying to merge on and off, in and out... across all lanes in heavy speeding, sometimes brake slamming traffic in an anemic little car was a blast. The driver's ed teacher must have had a death wish bigger than any sky-diver or base-jumper.

    Nice thread.
Growing up we always had go karts and a quarter midget that was fun. When I was about 12 I graduated to a '72 camaro with a 307. It was a beast for sure. At any given moment the entire drivetrain could have fallen out. I also drove my grandpa's old international farm truck, and my dad's old dodge 4 spd.
Vehicles on the road was my brother's 89 ranger 5 speed. I think I had my permit, but either way, i'm pretty sure it wasn't too legal.
My first car was an '86 mustang gt. It had the rear redone with gears, fast for a 16 year old who loved racing in a small town. When we went to test drive it, I jumped right in and took off. Later, dad asked how I learned to drive a stick. If he bought my excuse of quads, well, I haven't found that out yet.

I have no idea. I don't even remember what vehicle I took my drivers test in. It was my dad's... but I don't know what or when exactly. I didn't get my first car until I was 4 weeks away from getting commissioned as one of Uncle Sams Lt's.
