As this year is unfolding and velvet antlers are growing its becoming more apparent we might not have a shooter buck on the farm. I know as things get closer to season the bucks we have now might not be there and some new bucks will move in, that happens every year. We have never been in a situation where going into August we do not have a hitlist. In your past what have you done if this has happened to you. We have a few nice eights a solid ten point but i think they are young deer. Would you still target them being the best deer on the farm or give them all a pass? Sounds like a first world problem to me.....your choices are....shoot one of them....look for a new spot.....your choice. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
Yup... I didn't see a deer all season last year on public land, and I know how to hunt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hunt light in the early season, hunt as you normally would for the rut, if a buck steps out that makes you happy... shoot it
I feel like this is a test for all the guys at our hunting camp that talk about letting them grow. I think we wpuld have some top end bucks for the area if poachers did play such a big part. And only 1 dnr officer to watch an entire county. I guess we will see what the season brings Sent from my SM-N920P using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Just set a minimum standard and make sure everyone understands what it is. There are always shooters you don't see.
I've quite worry about a "hit list" of early season velvet bucks. For me, they are similar to unicorns when the season comes around. For some reason my property just doesn't have mature bucks typically using it during the summer. Lots of does and little bucks. Then sometimes around the first week of September or even later, once the bachelor groups break up, I tend to get some quality bucks using my property. That's when I start to get excited about the possibilities. 3 years ago that mature buck hadn't showed up through September so I formulated a plan and decided to hunt some public ground. I ended up killing a nice buck on my first public land hunt in early October. By the way, I still had some stud bucks show up on my place before the rut but I was fat and happy with my public land buck and didn't really try and hunt them that season.
