Years ago I used to be a regular shotgunner. I shot sporting clays league trap and hunted duck, goose, and ruffed grouse. Well the family and other hobbies have taken time from those activities (minus grouse hunting). So once or twice a year I still shoot sporting clays to get myself tuned up for grouse camp. Last night I went to buy some shells and almost fell over at the price they are up to. Cheap shells are now $10/box and the premium shells are up to $14/box. I remember when I used to shoot where the cheap ones were $4/box and the premium ones were $6/box. I don't remember them being that expensive last year either. What the heck caused shells to double in the last year or so? There is no way I could afford to be regular shooter anymore.
Recent increases in lead prices, hoarding and general price gouging have caused price increases. All ammo went up in price, not just shotgun shells. That said, you need to shop around. I'm seeing average shotgun shell prices about $6-7 a box. Sometimes as low as $5 for some promos.
That WAS the cheap place! After I saw the price at Gander Mountain I went to Fleet Farm (local Farm box store) and this was their prices which they typically are the cheapest. I did see some target loads for $6.00/box but they were 7/8oz loads.
The EPA wants to ban all lead ammunition in an effort to save the environment. Its just a back door way to make the price of ammunition to sky rocket and place a "tax" on gun owners. If we have to start shooting non lead ammo, you will be begging for $10/box shells.
i just got 1 oz. target loads a few weeks ago for like $5.29 a box and heavy load 1 1/8 oz for $5.95 or so
