bought a spotting scope on sale at cabelas. thought it might be ok but when I tried it out the other night it sucked. it was a Simmons 20x60 cost about $100 got it on sale for $40. I'll be taking it back. It didn't gather light very well and was hard to see out of. I would like some recommendations on a decent scope that won't break the bank.

The last statement is somewhat of a contradiction. Vortex has great quality glass even on the low end of their price range but that's still a few hundred vs $40

Leupold Gold Ring 10x40 can spot trace and impact of bullets over 1650 meter's. Thats over 1800 yards for you guys that use them for ranging.
