Ok Fella's this year i have to stay over in the UK , so i can save for my Co Elk hunt with Will next year . My problem is this :- This year i bought myself a Kanga Longbow to get myself into Trad Archery , but i still have not given my PSE X-force the taste of blood yet . So my question is this , for next years hunting trip to Co Elk hunt , do i use my X-Force to at least say she has got the kill or do i just go with my gut instinct and go with my Longbow and enjoy the experience for what it is and leave the X-Force at home ? . This really is bugging me __________________
You already know what my answer is going to be. But there will be 3 Kanga's heading up there from TX:d
Dave. I will also add. What happened on your last trip when you had a nice bull in close and could not get the shot off:evil:
It could be a Kanga owners club meeting and you know the exact reason as you stated above that i took up Trad hunting in the first place . My time will come . Jeff those words are so true , its never been about how big and if i get . I just wanna take an Elk , be it a cow or Bull i will take either as when the time is right and i'm really looking forward to meeting all you guys . Thats the best part of getting their , meeting new friends and sharing the experience .
Is next year this coming fall? Depends on how good you are. If you can't shoot it, don't use it. Being you just NOW started to shoot a stick bow, I'd have to say you probably aren't going to be good enough ... or at least you probably SHOULDN'T hunt with the stick bow. Really, this is July and you're going hunting when... Sept? I shot a stick bow for years and killed a lot of deer with it, but I allowed myself more than a couple months to learn how to shoot. It has to be automatic. I wouldn't save the money for an elk hunt and then screw it up by being unprepared. Oh sure, maybe you can pull off the shot... but that's awfully early in the recurve/longbow field. Traditional archery really requires shooting every day for the most part... and not grab ass. You have to work at it.
Yeah sorry davidmil , i should state i'm not hunting this fall , but next fall 2010 . I'll have about 18months experience under my belt before i get over their Fella . I,ve already been practicing every single day for 2months and quite happy with my progress , suppose i'm wondering whether to sell the X-Force and go full time Trad .
Dave. It very well could be, Will has 1, if Rob comes down there is another, plus I am working hard on the Shultzmister to have 1 by then:d
Mate, I was at the top of no name road this afternoon having a look. Three 6x6 bulls busted from the trees right out in front of me. I didn't have enough time to drop a camera shot on them , but boy were they dandies! I wouldn't sell the X and I would become as proficient with both as possible. There will be plenty of room to pack both. You are prematurely ejectulating yourself into a decision which should be made at 10,000 feet above sea level. I will never think less of you for pulling any string on an elk-bloody ell, they're hard enough with any bow!
My choice would be to pack them both - as a backup is a good idea for mountain hunting. Do you have any big game opportunities near home? I personally would like to try the trad gear on possibly a deer type game first...to gain that confidence. Either way - no matter which bow you're drawing back on that big Elk...your heart will be screaming!!! Gotta love it!
Think you're Right Will , as a couple others also said bring both . See how i feel at camp and make the decision on my confidence at the time , think i would regret the decision to sell the X-Force . Come on Steve , you know you join the club . 3 x Big 6X6 Bulls , hope you guys are lucky this fall . If not oh well , one of them beauty's could be mine next year . I love seeing them , and hearing them bugle is something else .
There is only one question to answer & you may not even be able to do so at this point in time. Are you willing to accept an unfavorable encounter(read as not killing) with an elk, that otherwise may have likely turned out different(dead elk) had you chosen to use a compound over a trad bow? Neither is a guarantee, & some even feel they are at the advantage with trad gear(I am not one of those), but ultimately you have to decide if you are happy just being there, or do you want to optimize your chances of killing one while there. Good luck either way.
