Why do you hate a 270?

    270 is good caliber.

There are several varieties of 700 Remington to chose from. My tikka is an awesome gun and was less than 600.00. The Ruger American rifle is down right cheap and really good value.

I have a sims recoil pad on my 300 win mag and I could shoot it all day long. I highly recommend it.

Casey 12:27:12.jpg .243 is a great round for a youngun. This is his first deer at 75 yards and his .243.

Since I hadn't shot my old man's .308 in years, I called him and asked for the specs.
His has a 20" barrel; and that coupled with the heavy loads he shoots for deer skewed my experience. As such, my statement was not necessarily correct; I should have been less definitive.

However, the OP wasn't asking for opinions on calibers, he was asking for good .270 rifles up to the $600 price range.

I did neglect to mention the Weatherby Vanguard as an option- my cousin has one in .30-06 and it is a really nice rifle for the money.

No, he said he was looking at .270 and asked what we would choose for under $600. Reading skills come in handy sometimes.

Let me start by saying I love my .270 grandpa hand me down model 700. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Great ballistics. Much less drop at 300 then say a 30-06. Got a kick though. 308 great. Just not so hard hitting. I think he could handle the .270 or 30-06. Oh and 30-06 is literally everywhere. .270 is pretty common as well. Can't remember the last time I saw 7mm-08, or whatever it is, without driving an hour.
For budget I have heard really good reviews on the savage axis. Either 30-06 or .270. Just about $350 or so, I think. Killer deal. Doesn't fell like a 700 or model 70 though.

7mm-08 rounds are available at Walmart (atleast were) however, all ours ever carried were the remington core lok and my experience is that is NOT a good load for deer. My son shot a deer with his sisters and the bullet never expanded on a deer at 100 yards.

We used hard to find winchester ballistic tip with good success.

But the federal fusions seem to be easier to find and work well.

It's just a very in between round. For the felt recoil of the gun you can do much better in both velocity and ballistic coefficients. You may as well step up to the 30-06 or down to the 25-06. This is where the 7mm-08 begins to really shine. The ballistic coefficents are higher than any caliber (other than a 6.5/.264) and the felt recoil is drastically less ( 12.1 ft/lbs vs 17.1 ft/lbs in a 140grn bullet) when compared to the .270. The .270 isn't a bad deer round but certainly wouldn't be my first choice.

I really like a 140grn Barnes TSX bullet for the 7mm-08. Best hunting bullet in the world.

That makes sense. I do laugh when people talk about a 270 not having much kick, that sure didn't describe mine.

But as a pure deer gun, that thing was awesome. Deer just dropped and it flat out shot.

I like the 7.08 but it just doesn't rock them like the 308 in my experience.

I hate a 243 for a kid. They are good for a marksman but a kid gets full of nerves and doesn't always make perfect shots.

My kids are the 2 youngest of 8 grandchildren that hunted our lease and I tracked way too many deer over the years that would have been short track jobs for other rounds. 7mm.08 is a much better option.

I will agree with the 7-08 not having that "wow" knock down power. I watched a buddy last year take 1 mule deer and 2 cow elk at 250 plus with a 140grn TSX. One cow went down immediately the others took long (Under a minute). I want to build one for my wife, she is shooting my 7 mag right now, and secretly use it as a new pack rifle:D Those short actions are light!

My first rifle was a win 30-30 which I really liked.
My cousin (40) is still shooting his .243 & his son killed his first buck with it this year.

However, If I was going to go out and buy a youth gun, it'd be a browning Abolt or Xbolt in 7mm08. My brother has a micro medallion and it's a sweet shooting little gun.

25-06 has low recoil and does the job I see alot of people deer hunt with the Smith & Wesson Ibolt, I started with a .243 and never had a problem putting deer down.

A 30-30 lever is the best brush/woods gun out there for deer in my opinion....I'll take that all day over a shotgun....accurate short and light....i put a set of Williams fire sights with peep on mine and man is that thing awesome.....love shooting that thing

I would still choose a 308 over a 30-30 anyday. The ruger scout 308 looks like it would be a nice woods gun that could still reach out if need be.

Not in the price range of the op but
    Check it out
