Here, here. Rob and I have set up alot of my buddies and can get someone shooting good groups at 20 yards just like you said Bry. I totally agree with you though. It gives a false sense of confidence if they don't practice on their own regularly.
I don't know how many times I have had to explain that number was not weight. Then the strange look I would get when I started explaining spine.:p
I have no doubt that there are many that do not tune nor know how to tune their equipment. Make no mistake in that it is something new to archery/bowhunting. It has been taken to a higher level in recent years as far as I can remember. Back in the 70's and before we knew that you had to have matched arrows and proper spine. Some bow were center shot and some not. FOC was not a scientific equation as I remember but could be attained with different points for wood or aluminum. I never heard of paper tuning back then, not to say someone wasn't doing it. I know I've gone to Quantico Marine Base to qualify and seen guys not be able to hit the vitals on a 3D deer at 20-25 yards...unthinkable!
I work with and know MANY people who get the bow a wee, maybe 2-3 max before season and shoot a couple arrows and call it good....I think it is insane!!
with all this said, they, and I have ,as many of you have, in the past, killed deer with an untuned bow/arrow ....the sad part is most animals are killed within 10-18 yds and most guys don't know that their arrow is not getting max speed or KE, but they know they just killed a deer either way....however, when the day comes, and it will come, that 25-35 yd shot will present itself and that untuned set upo may very well fail them.
That's why I like Suburban Whitetail Management of Northern Virginia's qualification requirement. 2 out of 3 arrows w/broadheads on at 20 and 30 yards in a 6 inch target, try it.
Prime examle in this video.Hunter has a blind, feeder, camera but doesn't have a tuned bow.At the end you can see the lighted nock going in circles all the way to the deer.In the slow motion it is pretty clear,as well as how much a deer can drop. I actually posted that he needs to look into tuning his arrows but it got deleted some time back.OH,WELL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyEXZl3LfoA
Man, forgot you were with them... I spent the last few days of turkey season this year with Bob Livingston. He gave me a handful of the practice targets to work with after we met up at the graveyard in TA 15C. Gotta get some time behind the bow and try our the targets when I am done with all the traveling I am doing...pretty sure I can handle it.
If you PM me your e-mail address I can send the .pdf of the target so you can print off as needed. Bob is a really nice guy. Who wouldn't like Bob?
Sure it does,at 6 feet but what about 3 feet or 10 feet? That is 1 major issue with paper tuning and not understanding how to do it properly.Untuned bows can shoot good paper,if you find the right distance,or you can shoot good holes with a torqued grip, but the bow still isn't tuned. The "average" person has no comprehention of these things.
