I am going to ask for a new hunting knife for Christmas this year. Something under $50. I would also like to get some type of knife sharpening system... any suggestions on that?

I have always preferred folding knifes because they fit in my pack better. Do you prefer fixed blade knifes or folding knifes and why?

I prefer fixed blades and I am also very interested in what others would suggest!

Maybe ask for something else and get that one with my own money. What makes that the knife to have Bruce?

I personally LOVE knives ... and I am especially fond of steel blades with a high carbon content ... I would see if Rancid would make you one for a price ....

Why I like steel .... SO much easier to sharpen .. tho they dont hold an edge as long as stainless..... and they get scary sharp .... stainless can as well, but it takes much more work

I'm trying to learn more about knifes myself. I'm far from a craftsman but i am starting to sharpen my old knife on a flat stone by hand. It's going okay I guess but I am shaving hair with it pretty easily. But I just want a better knife to start with and maybe some great sharpening aid if possible. Interesting take on the steel blades.

    For sharpening... Google Scary Sharp.

I use it for my chisels and plane blades and have taken to using it for much more lately.

Get a piece of marble tile from Home Depot or Lowes (needs to be FLAT) and a range of sand paper grits. I can get a mirror edge that shaves.

    BUCK Knives

Here are two new knives I picked up at Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Tennessee a few weeks ago. I prefer fixed but I have tons of both. These are very compact, extremely light, and razor sharp right out of box. Plus they look kinda cool IMO. They were on sale when I bought them for $20 a piece. I think they retail for $30 a piece.

i used an old timer 1940t
its the only knife i will ever dress a deer with. perfect size, quick to sharpen, holds an edge, and as silly as it sounds, the easiest knife i have found to remove the anus.

    VG-10 steel, lightness and a non-slip handle.

I have field dressed, skinned and quartered adeer with that knife. When I field dress I cut up one side of the sternum where the ribs connect to get at that section easier. All of that and when I am done I buff the edge and it is back to shaving.

    That steel holds an edge.

That knife is worth twice what they are asking. I have as good or better knives but they cost double +.

I notice nobody has suggested a knife with a gut hook. What do you guys think about gut hook knives?

I prefer no guthook and would not buy a knife that had one.

I have never been a fan of gut hook knives. I don't think I even own one.

They save you all of 5 seconds, which you lose when tryin to cut around the anus ... I would say to go without the gut hook ...

now it may sound like a gimic but i bought one and i love this thing. wyoming knife it comes scary sharp and works wonders not to mention its only 20bucks and the size of any folder. The best part no sharpening necessary the blades are replaceable. Replacement blades are only 5 bucks.
