My brother and I have just started doing small food plots/kill plots. This past spring was our first plot. Now we have three fall plots we have planted. We were talking well, texting back and forth today about them and he said we need to find out what they like. This is when I realized my views on food plots is different from his and what I think is more important versus him. I wanted to have food plots that last longer than other food souces such as the soy beans that they are using now. I want our food plots to last later into the season. Personally what I have gathered from things I have read the reasons for a small food plot is to in no particular order:
    A. To hold deer on your property.
    B. Give the deer a place to feed on their way to there main food source.
    C. Have some nutritional value for the herd.
    D. Last longer than other food sources so that it attracts them to where you want them.
    E. Possibly attact a buck durring th eday time due to cover being around the food plot making them feel more secure.

I really haven't thought about planting something simply because they like it. Other than apple trees and persimons that we already have. More of what will last longer. I just figured that they prefure to eat what they have available easily. I mean they eat acorns because pretty much everything has died off and its what is available. I have just assumed they sort of go in order from what is most readily available to what is left. I also thought most things that are sold as mixed seeds (for those of us who either don't have the kowledge yet to make their own mixes or ones who don't have the time to put it together) are things deer like to eat or else companies wouldn't sell the mixes they do.

We planted Biologic Green Patch Plus that is a mixture of New Zieland Clover, New Zieland Brassicas and Wheat and Oats and Evolved Harvest Shot Plot in one of the others.

In short I guess my question really is, what is more imprtant in a small food plot/kill plot? Lasting longer into the winter or things they like/enjoy eating?

i have used a mix of things
    clover
    alfalfa
    mix grasses
    fessent food
    beans
    sunflowers
and around my food plot i plant tall sorghum and field corn this gives deer cover and makes them feel safe while im pulling my bow back to stick them, also these are late winter foods so the deer are in you plot year around

i cant remember all the names if the things i use, but the mix has worked great for me, sunflower they will eat as soon as the plant is 6 to 12 inches tall after that they dont eat it, but on the flip side, it bring birds and other critters in that tell the deer the area is safe to feed, dont just think about the deer think about all the animals, the deer watch the animals and critters, and if they are safe then the deer will be more calm and you will have a lot more activity in front of you just my 2 sense
