I see these growing along ditches, creeks and many other wet areas. I also see them many times along overgrown field edges.... But the areas I see them the most is along both out of service as well as in service R.R. beds.

The bucks always tear these up.... Just curious what kind of tree these are.

Yep, Sumac..... bucks love to tear them up. They seem to prefer edge terrain, just like the bucks.

    Sounds about right.

Sumac grows like dandelions here in northern Illinois (southern WI too).. along highways.. roadsides.. hillsides.. etc.

Gets a fire-shade of red in fall.. looks pretty cool.

They seem to also be the first trees to show fall colors in late summer as well in my area.

Is that "poison" sumac? Or is that some other type of sumac?

yep, once you got em, they'll definitely take over an area pretty quickly. never have seen any buck activity in the patches by me, but they do make walking thru them a pain.

Nah, that's not poison sumac, just a regular ole sumac tree, as Scott researched and discovered. They grow like weeds around here as well, and the bucks tear them up pretty good too. I think it's because they just don't get very big.....They turn a beautiful bright red in the fall.....but man are they a PITA....I just cut a gozillian of them off of my grandma's fencerow last week....

Sumac spreads like weeds. In the fall just like your picture turns a brilliant red. Looks awesome. All over here in Minnesota as well.

Most guys I know call it Buck Brush for obvious reasons. But it is Smooth Sumac.

You can make a tea out of the fruits, very high in Vitamin C
