I was cleaning out some ivy and brush from the side of my house and this guy came out hissing and showing his mouth to me...so I had to put him down.:ninja:

You've never seen a garter snake before?

    EXTREMELY common and completely harmless..

Caught one the other day when my dog was barking up a storm in the backyard... she didn't know what to make of it...

Exactly. when my brothers and I were kids we used to see who could catch the most of them in the summer. No more dangerous than an earth worm!

cool...wasn't sure. I have a 1 1/2 year old son that plays over there so I was just being cautious. I thought it was a garter but just wasn't sure...it's been awhile since i've seen one.

Even thought they stink badly I like garter snakes a lot and I use to keep some as pets when I
    was a kid.

I pretty much leave the snakes alone, especially the ones that eat mice and small rodents. A "dead" snake means fat and happy rodents! I'd rather they eat the mice than have the mice eat my stuff...ever hear of a snake causing diseases? Check this out:

    http://www.cdc.gov/rodents/diseases/index.html

Click on the "directly" and "indirectly" links.

Until it's dead I sure it's a King Cobra, I'll let the autopsy prove me wrong!

This. Killing non-deadly, non-threatening snakes is a poor choice.

    Same here...

Now, i will kill water snakes out of my pond. But thats only because A, they get huge and kill tons of bluegill, and B, they try to bite me all time.

Well like I said before...I wasn't sure and I sure as hell wasn't going to let something dangerous roam my backyard. So it is what it is. When I saw that this open it's mouth at me all I thought was " you gotta go down"!! lol....sorry to the snake lovers here...but my yard my rules.
