What kind of insects are these?

    I noticed these insects since I bought my place over a decade ago. I just never thought to inquire about them before. I first started noticing them on warmer days in the winter gathered in certain places on the snow. Then I'd see them gathered on my gravel driveway like the pictures below.

    Does anyone know what they are? I'm leaning toward Gnats.

    The dark line in the middle of the picture are the insects.

    This is a close up. If you magnify you can see that they have wings.

    Kill them with gas and fire.

    There are several species of knats so probably. I can't see them clearly enlarging takes them out of focus...they do swarm like that. Nasty things

    Well, I sprayed them with Flying Insect Killer. It's a Raid product the company I retired from produces. It did the trick.

    I admit, it would have been more fun with gas and fire!
