Football and Tennis (weird combo I know) my Fresh and Soph years...then had my first bow the summer after Soph year...was crazy with excitement to hunt everyday I could...and then it hit me at the first Mandatory football practice that Aug...Football and Bowhunting don't mix...Quit all sports at that time and hunted everyday I could after school - those are still the best hunting memories for me and my buddies. Now I find myself coaching my kids "tiny-tots" and "peewee" leagues...actually enjoy that quite a bit...good feeling when you can "coach up" a young kid who initially had no confidence. Would also really like to find a way to get archery into my kids Phys Ed classes as they grow up (any help there?). Wife just took up running last year - and has convinced me to join - doing our first 10K soon...figure it can't hurt with an Elk hunt planned this year. I think I might like this running as well...
High school Varsity baseball (centerfield) Note: I always wanted to play football, but I was a "band geek" and played in the high school marching band, concert band, jazz band, etc... US Coast Guard I played on one of the base's softball teams, back in 1981.
Very nice! If I focused solely on road races, I'm confident that I could get my time down to sub 3:30, but no where near low enough to qualify for Boston right now. All these trail races are making me slow. Yes they are, and there are actually many that are longer than 100 miles, with the longest being the Ultimate Ultra in New York at the the easy distance of 1,300 miles!
I played baseball and football until I destroyed my shoulder my Jr. year of High School. I held the school record for tackles for several years w/ 16 in a game, and had 3 other games with 14 tackles, while playing middle linebacker and defensive captain as a Sophomore. I also played a little baseball, and have the claim to fame of hitting the LONGEST Homerun many people have seen hit at 3 different fields at one point. A friend of my little brother's who played D-I college baseball did better one of those just a few years later though. Now I'm an old man, that shoulder never did get better, and though a TRUE LEFTY, I shoot a bow right handed, because that left shoulder just won't let me do it. Losing sports forced me to focus more steadfastly on the "books," and I went to college on a PAID scholarship because of my mind not my body!!! In some ways I'm thankful for that. But I still love the feel of a baseball coming off a bat, as I turn my hips into it and know that I hit that ball with everything that I could coming out of the sweet part of that bat.
Well if you can keep that sub 3:30 time when you're 45, you'll qualify. :D While I was looking that up, my wife is 32 so her qualifying time is 3:40. I think I could do a sub 5:30. That would qualify me if I was 80 and over. Ever complete or thought about trying dualthlons or triathlons? I suck at swimming, so I might try short dualthlons in the future.
Yeah, I definitely would like to get into triathlons more, I've done a few sprint tris, but I don't own a bike right now, so I can't really fully train. Triathlons can be an expensive hobby. And like you, I'm not the strongest swimmer in the world, but one of my life goals is to complete an ironman, so I need to start practicing my stroke at some point.
competitive sports: Soccer (highschool, college, semi-pro, coaching), Golf (highschool), football (4-8th grade, coaching), baseball (3-9th grade), motorcycle road racing (semi-pro class though not very competitive) sadly, now my knees ache from the years of astroturf in soccer... the new field turf is SOOOOO much better... and now i'm SOOOO out of shape for anything other than a couple quick sprints up the field, then i'm cashed.... now I play guitar, golf occasionally, snowmobile, and ride bicycles with the fam... and I stick to the sidelines for the most part in sports these days...
I could have guessed that. I have a ton of respect for anyone who is able to complete one. I know two people that have, and they worked their butt off. I admire the determination and focus it takes to train and complete an ironman.
Ran cross country and winter track in H.S., as well as played lacrosse in the spring. I college I played 2 years of Rugby, which was a blast. I took this year off from Rugby to focus on training for USMC OCS which I'll be attending this summer at Quantico, VA.
Good luck deerslayer--my dad went through OCS on Quantico in 68-69 and retired from the Corps in1993. Quantico is my main hunting grounds. I see you are from NY and will be a long ways from home. If you need a hot meal and a place to get away from the rigors of training, please let me know. My wife and I will cook you up a hot meal or two. I live right on top of the base. Brett
Played baseball and golf in high school. Played first and third base all trough high school and legion ball. Probably could have played juco ball but opted to concentrate on my studies. Ha, that didn't last long! Got staightened out and am currently in the golf business on the maintenance side. As for my golf game...there is a lot to be desired.
Like many, sports was a big part of growing up. I played football from the time I started school until I graduated high school. We won NC 1-A State Championship my senior year, I was the center at 5'6" 140lbs, LOL. I wrestled varsity all four years of high school. Finished 4 in the state my senior year. Also played on the tennis team and golf team in HS. Golf was just for the free green fees. I played intrumural basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, etc etc during college. Now I play basketball twice a week and golf on Thursday (when it's warm). I'll play in the occasional softball league when there's an opening.
Four years of HS Football & Track and Field. 1st Team This, All Conference that. Passed on a D1 Track Scholarship to get a more one on one education (main reason), stay w/ close to my family, and play college FB. Played one year of college FB got hurt as a Freshmen hitting our Two Time All American fullback. Dr.'s told me I would never throw again. Next year I proved them wrong and provisionally quallified for nationals (javelin). My body went to crap after that and I never really did anything competition wise. I was more on the team for moral support and to coach two national champions.
Thanks a lot. If I remember reading right, you were in the Corps, is that right? I'd like to pm you some Q's if that's alright as not to hijack this thread. I greatly appreciate the offer. I will keep you in mind when it gets closer to my ship date. My uncle is a Col. is the USMC and he should be moving to Q town about the time I'm there, but it's always nice to have friends in the area. Thank you.
swam for about 10 years, got burnt out and played tennis throughout high school. 2 time state champ team for MN. was going to play in college, but decided I wanted what I thought to be a more "true" college experience, so just played on the club team. Ran the Chicago 1/2 marathon a few years back, i'm not built for LD running. almost did a fitness competition 2 years ago, but prancing around stage like that isn't my thing. currently, just hittin the gym 5-6 days/week.
my old personal trainer, and close friend, just completed her first ironman and is set to do another this summer. Ridiculously impressive. Good Luck!
Where did you go to school littleshooter? When did you graduate? Congratulation's on the state championships!!
