I have always had a passion for basketball. I played and practiced religously up until my freshman year of high school. I was very undersized at that point (around 5' 5" or 5 6") and the high school coaches were kind of giving me the cold shoulder and wasn't giving me the opportunity I thought I deserved, so I quit. Biggest mistake of my life. In middle school, we won the Sectional State championship for small school, my 7th AND 8th grade year. I still hold the record for highest 3pt percentage (somwhere around 56% I think) at my school and I'm somewhere in the top 5 for most 3 pt shots made. Like I said, I was undersized so I was mainly a perimeter player. Not to toot my own horn, but I was a lights out shooter :D I played rec league basketball after my freshman year. I finally grew my sophmore year and hit like 5' 11" which is how tall I am now. If I were that size my freshman year, I would have never quit. I still play occasionally and my game is probably better now than it was then. I love the game and everything about it. After quitting basketball, I decided to pick up a golf club. I didn't play my first round of golf until a week before freshman tryouts. I showed up and shot something like 8 over on 9 holes. Luckily I got picked. I didn't play any varsity matches my freshman and sophmore year but still worked at it. I showed up my Junior year and played the 3 position. My senior year, my 9 hole average was 38 and medaled in several tournaments. Got a few college offers but turned them down, I was absolutely SICK of golf by the time the year was over. I've probably played 2 rounds in the last year and a half. Now, all I do is shoot competitive archery. I'm probably better at this than I was at any of my other sports. I guess I'll have to see where I go with it :D
Baseball and football my Jr and Sr years of High School. 20+ years of 12" softball with a couple state titles.
Ran long distance races for about 10 years..nothing over 6.2 miles.. Helped coach baseball for 7 years..
I never played any sports. Started working for my uncle at age 12 and was always more interested in hunting after school anyway than playing any kind of sports. Looking back, I regret not playing but I can't change that now. The local kids and I always were playing something when my freetime allowed it.
Baseball was it. I played from the time I was 5 until my early 20's, finishing up with a mens summer baseball league. Our school wasn't big enough for a football team, and I don't like playing basketball....so baseball was it.
Football and baseball in HS. Thought I wanted to play college FB, decided against it. Had two knee ops already and had the hands, just not the speed for D1, so the costs outweighed the benefits. Played some years of fast pitch/drink lots softball up till about two years ago, just didn't have the time anymore.
Ran track and field and played football in high school. Was first team all state as both a linebacker and in the 200M dash. I was named the AA Defensive State Player of the Year in Football my senior year in highschool. I also competed in the Virginia football all star game which included such players as James Farrior, Tiki Barber, Rhonde Barber, and Cornell Brown. I went on to play football at a D1AA school. After college I became involved in MMA fighting for many years and trained in many disciplines.
In Junior high and Highschool I always participated in track, basketball, and football. In track I was more of a sprinter/jumper, as I competed in the 400m dash, 100m dash, 4x100m relay, long jump, and high jump. My 4x100m team qualified for state a couple times, and I was SO close to qualifying for high jump, but I was in a stacked sectional and just missed it. Basketball was probably my least favorite of the 3, due to the coach. I started at shooting guard/point guard most of the time, but was far from spectacular. I played football from 8th grade up until my Junior year. I played at RB and DB, and we had a pretty good team. We didn't lose our first game until our sophomore year, and qualified for state all 4 years of high school. Football was probably my favorite sport, but due to a shoulder dislocation that resulted in surgery, I had to end me high school career early.
Started playing organized basketball when I was 8, started all 4 years of HS, and made 2nd team All-State my senior year. I'm confident I could have walked-on to a small college, but I didn't pursue it. Ran cross country all 4 years of HS. Team won the state championship twice, highest individual finish was top 20 in state. Ran the 400m, 800, 4x400m relay, and 110m hurdles in track. Placed 5th in the 400m at state my junior year. My team finished 2nd at the 4x400m relay that year as well. Played intramural basketball, softball, and flag football during college Now I run mostly long distance trail runs, but I also "compete" in local 5k/10k road races with the local running club. Training for my first ultra-marathon at the moment.
Nice on the 400m dash! What was your best time? I absolutely hated that event because I was so physically drained once it was over. That was definitely the farthest distance I was willing to run, as I was mostly a sprinter.
Pretty sure my best time was somewhere around 51, it was my best event, but like you, I also hated it with a passion. Usually the 400m was right after the 800m, so sometimes I only had like 10 minutes of rest between events. That was killer.
Basketball and baseball in HS, one year of D2 basketball. We had a coaching change and I decided it was taking away from the "college life" (or I had a bad 18 year old boy attitude towards the whole situation ). Long story short, I transferred schools, met my wife, and had a lot of fun playing intramural sports.
I started running 5k races last summer. I completely suck, but its become a family event. My wife is a fairly serious runner and I wanted to participate in something she loves. I have to admit, they are a lot more fun to participate in that I originally thought. My daughter usually does a kids race if they have one (usually ranging from 200 yards - 1 mile), I do the 5k, and my wife does the longest distance they offer. She recently qualified for Boston, so that was cool. What is the distance on the ultramarathon? Are they always the same distance or do they vary? About all I know about them is that they are longer than 26.2.
Vito and Hooker, my father used to make me run cross country when I was kid. I am a sprinter by nature so it absolutely killed me to run those events as a little kid. But it paid off for me as running was always a strong point for me throughout my entire athletic career. It is funny how training like that at an early age has a lasting effect. Vito, your daughter will benefit from her participation in those events.
Played baseball since I was 8 years old. Played in junior college, mostly a pitcher there. Still playing in the summer adult league, pretty much like recreational.....
Nice! I couldn't imagine qualifying for Boston right now as me. I'd have to run a 3:10 marathon. My fastest road in 3:42. Well, my first one will more than likely just be a 50k (33 miles), but they are generally 50k (33m), 50m, 100k (66m), and 100m races. My ultimate dream is to run the Leadville 100.
I was part of an inagural football team that we started at our private chiristian school in 05 (my junior year) we went 3-7 that year. My senior year we went 9-1 with two overtime games and wining them both. The first overtime game was our first win against a public school and the second overtime game was against our most hated rival in the last game of the season. Man if I could relive that season again!! We didnt make the playoffs becasue we didnt have them. We played in an independant district with all the other christian schools around.
