Had a really good chance at a great looking buck this morning at 18 yards and some how blew it. I know when i took the shot the arrow hit to far forward. When i finally got down to go check my arrow after watching him throw it i seen where it only had about 3 inches of penetration and no blood at all. What did i hit?

Probably the shoulder blade or socket

Shoulder hit is what it sounds like.

    Mechanical broad head?

To me it sounds like a 2X4 breaking. I had an elk hunter shoot a nice 6X6 with a bow and when I heard the noise, I knew that we wouldn't find much, if any blood and that the elk would survive.

Three weeks later, I had a rifle hunter shoot the same elk with the broad head stuck in his shoulder as the bull chased a cow.

Yeah it sounds like a shoulder hit, do not blame the head and I have also witnessed a rage go thru both shoulder blades.

That sounds like a shoulder hit to me. It happened to me once with a large mechanical broadhead. I followed the deer for 3 hours and over a mile that night and never found him. He lived for 2 more months, then he finally died from infection. I found him shortly after he died, so I took the rack and the shoulder blade. The bone actually started to heal back over. Amazing animals!

The positive news is you may have a chance at him again. It is hard to stay calm when you have a nice deer in front of you!

Yeah its pretty rough to take in. The fact of seeing a deer with horns on the second day and it being a shooter and it all coming together and it gone just like that.

Sounds like you hit shoulder. I hope he survives.
