About two months ago I started having trouble with my computer. It would just start to randomnly shut down. I have Windows Vista. I have never had a computer do the whole random shut down thing. The more I have read the more I think it has something to do with the Registry? I am not even sure what the Registry is but it seems to fit the bill in terms of the symptoms my computer is displaying.

My computer will operate if I press F8 prior to it initializing then I just click "safe mode with networking" and it will boot up. That is the only way my comp will remain somewhat stable. I have run all kinds of anti-virus/malware stuff and it all comes back clean. I even restored my computer back to it's original state in which I purchased it. It still has problems! What gives guys? I am getting so tired of having to deal with it.

You've got a corrupt file more than likely. But, it could also be something on the motherboard overheating and causing an open circuit. When it shuts down on its own, can you start it right back up? If so, I'd look at a wipe and re-install.

I can start it right up. How do I "wipe" and re-install?

Battery maybe...our lap top is on battery 3, and now requires we keep it plugged in or it does similar things. I am sure I am way off, but since I am no guru I thought I would play captain obvious and maybe get lucky.

I'd have someone who is qualified do it for you. The hard drive is rewritten to all zeros and then operating system and everything else is re-installed.

This problem actually began when my battery started to fail. I think my computer shutdown unexpectedly so many times that something got corrupted or misaligned. Something simple is off and I cannot figure it out because I am a moron. When I run diagnostics on the comp, the comp runs great up until the scan gets to the corrupted file or whatever then it just shuts down......

IV, I probably just need to bring it in, I just do not want to pay the money because they charge our butt off in this area for comp fixes.

Brett, if you're patient enough there's forums for stuff like that just like we have the bowhunting forums...

I accidentally installed a new OS to a wrong partition on my wife's brand-new laptop last month, and the Geek Squad at Best Buy wanted like $200 to fix it... I found a great forum, registered and had a couple people walk me through wiping the drive and re-installing.

Took about three pages on a thread with me asking questions and people chiming in to help, but we got 'er done. :)

I've had it happen before on a laptop that I had Windows XP installed on and it was an overheating issue. The fan had gone out on mine.
