Don't get hung up on all of must have gear from the pro's. Shoot what you're comfortable with. Same principle applies to speed..

Enjoy each day and don't stress over killing the biggest deer.

Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice and practice. Practice from the ground. Practice from your stand. Practice with your hunting gear on. Practice sitting down. Practice at longer ranges. Practice until your shot becomes "second nature".

    then....

    What he said.

Find the right place to hunt and know when to hunt it. You can practice 8 hours a day but if you don't see deer it won't make a difference.

Are we talking in regards to jsut wanting to kill a deer, any deer? If so then...

Find a good spot & spend as much time in the woods as you can.

No but we were limited to ONE piece of advice. That would be sit in the right place and the rest will eventually take care of itself. :fro:

I've said this many times. Learn (study) as much as you can about deer. Specifically, "your" deer, the ones that you will be hunting. Learn their habits and preferences for all seasons, even the non hunting seasons. Through scouting and observation, you will learn the different doe family units, their hang outs etc. Same goes for the bucks, they behave a little differently than the does.

Remember, you can have the best of equipment and be a world champion archer, but if you can't find a deer you will not get a deer.

I know, I was just trying to start the first location debate of the season.

A successful hunt happens in the practice and preparation. It is not about luck.

There are two( I know he said one, but I don't follow directions well) things that go hand in hand for success. The first is practice. If you practice enough it becomes a lot easier to remain calm when the time comes to let one fly. The second is "right place right time". This is where I am biased. KEEP a journal. Learn and study everything you can about the deer that YOU hunt. It has already been said in this thread, but if you are in the wrong spot, even by a little bit, the best shooting in the world won't get the job done. With that said if you can't shoot it doesn't matter where you are! Like I said the two go together. It is a chicken or egg thing I guess. If you do them both you should be in great shape.
