Archery is considered a sport isn't it? what's a sport without a little competition? i.e. bragging rights to big bucks. Don't get me wrong i shoot at least one doe a year for the freezer, but to add to the fun i like to look for the bigguns. nothing wrong with filling the freezer and getting something to hang on the wall all in the same season is there?
I have to disagree with you here. the guys that BB22 is talking about is what most anti-hunters I speak to use as a reason why they don't like hunters.... I believe there are two type of trophy hunters, ones that put in the time and effort to go after a big buck on public or private land and the ones that pay BIG money to hunt deer farms and High fence areas to kill big bucks. IMO there is a big difference in the two and calling the latter hunting is just wrong.
Trophy hunting as a personal pursuit, to please yourself, I understand. Trophy hunting so you can hang something on a wall and say you are better than someone else, I do not.
IMO is the key there. For some, they consider that hunting. That being killing an animal with a weapon. Its not up to us to decide what someone else deems hunting, especially when its legal. Anti-hunters are against all hunters, hence the name. And they do not see a difference in the two trophy hunters you describe. Only other "hunters" do.
I think a lot of deer hunters don't care what they shoot as long as they shot something. Dec 6, 2010 – A father killed his adult son in an apparent hunting accident I bet none of the hunters, pulling the trigger, are/were trophy hunting. With that said, a good advantage in hunting mature deer is that we make sure it’s what we want to shot. Jussayn
Maybe you can clear this up for me? What makes something NOT hunting? Using a rifle? Paying for the hunt? Being in a box blind? I don't even remember high fence being mentioned earlier but whatever... Your opinion is just that...YOUR OPINION...it does'nt make something WRONG If you want to be able to continue to hunt in the future...you should want as many law abiding hunters out there as possible supporting the sport rather than being worried about what type's of hunting the anti's approve off
Shooting a big racked buck makes you feel good about your accomplishment. No matter what shooting a buck is a good feeling, but a realy big buck that you can take to shows and expos.. makes you feel realy good about yourself.
Yes this is exactly what I mean. Think about the definition of "hunting". When you hunt something, you go out there and "find" it or "hunt" for it. When you go kill those fenced in deer with artificially enlarged antlers, you are not hunting them. You are selecting and then shooting. The guides basically say, go here at this time in this place and this deer will walk by. Where does the "search" or "hunt" take place here?? The only hunt that takes place is the one you do online to find the guide that grows the biggest deer.
Very well put... in that case, why wouldnt you just shoot a doe? I mean, a deer is a deer right? Its in our human nature to be competitive. If nobody competed, we wouldn't have many things that we do today including sports. I am fairly new to hunting and i can't say that I am in that trophy stage yet and I probably wouldnt pass on an average sized buck just to wait for that monster because I work hard for the opportunities I do get at deer and I'm pleased with anything I can take really. Anybody that hunts can say they have taken a doe or a small buck, but how many people can say they shot a 170" buck like stated above. It's all personal preference and if you are just as happy with a small, young buck as you would be with an old, huge buck, thats good for you but not everyone is the same way. Point is........ Bigger bucks look better on your wall
it's NOT Hunting when you haven't done any HUNTing. using a Rifle- No Problem paying for the access to HUNT- No Problem Being in a Box Blind-No Problem Stepping into a blind, stand, or whatever, without putting any time or effort into it is not Hunting but killing what someone else hunted for you, that is my problem with it. the Definition for Hunting is The act of conducting a search for something. But again that is MY OPINION.
also I would never bring this argument up in front of anyone outside of the Hunting family. And am thankful for all that that by a tag or license.
By that definition, we should assume hunters that pay an outfitter to hunt free ranging properties, are not hunting? The outfitter put up the stands and told them which ones to sit in, so they didn't actually search for anything.
they may hunt somewhere else, but in that situation they are killing not hunting, but that is my opinion. on the flipside of that if someone i'm sure thinks that I'm not hunting because i use a comnpound bow instead of a Traditional Bow. to each their own.
Just goes to show you.... you can broaden a narrow road, but you can't broaden a narrow mind.... When did this thread switch from big bucks vs. little bucks to what is and isn't hunting?
Because shooting big bucks (trophy hunting) is real hunting...unless it wasn't challenging enough. Then you're not hunting at all. C'mon LC, follow along.
Ah, got it! I'll try to do better, but some of us actually have to work and just check the forum once in a while.
