I sense a little resentment there, hopefully you're not bitter because he's successful...;):D

I rarely work a full 40 hours and even when I do, I probably only do 10 hours of actual "work" out of those 40 hours.

I worked 80 hour weeks during my summers while in college for beer and gas money. It was motivation to study in college. Never again.

And what do I do with all my time off? I have this thing called a family. And hobbies. And a grill.

we have around 120 hours of sick time a year. I bet i'll use anywhere from 8-24 hours a year. It seems there are always people who know how to work the system and abuse this time, it's nice to have if your really sick, but just using it all the time to use it, like someone taking a vacation day or two then taking a sick day or vice versa.

I currently have 13 full work weeks of sick time built up (520 hours). If we do not use the sick time, we dont lose it, it just keeps building. I probably take 1 day of sick each year.

My workplace has a sick leave donation program, where you can donate hours to someone who has exhausted all of their sick and vacation leave for legitimate reasons. On an almost weekly basis we get a donation request for someone who has cancer or some other terrible disease in which they have exhausted all of their sick and vacation time and need donations to stay on the payroll and maintain their insurance. When you see a 40 year old with 4 kids at home who has cancer and has exhausted all leave and is now at rishk of losing benefits, I realize just how important sick leave is and how it shoudnt be abused.

Yeah Bruce most of my time I do take time off or call in are for my 2 boys. But sometimes I just take off or call off for some R&R especicially with the fishing pole in hand. I work Saturday and Sunday nights so I usually burn a lot of PTO for those Saturdays. This is the day when my boys sports are always being played. Out of my 33 days I keep about 10 for hunting season.

The old sick leave debate, I get around 100 sick and 160 vacation annually. I use just about all of my vacation time annually as we can only carry over 250 so that's 20 days off and I use sick days as needed for appts, kids, etc. I really am trying to build my sick leave as there is no limit on carry over and it could be quite beneficial for emergencies or serious health issues/injuries.

All that being said I work at a fairly large company where my absence(unless it's unusually long, more than 3 days) won't have a crippling effect. So I generally don't worry too much about it, I mean it's called "leave" not "stay"(sarcasm don't anyone freak out). Hell, I even know a few guys who might make their dentist appointments at like 1030 and take the back half of the day off behind it to get a good evening hunt in. I'd be willing to bet many a deer has been killed on sick leave.....those bastards!!

I sit on the other side of the fence as the employer of roughly 75 people for about 15years now, we do PTO to the tune of 22 days off a year after 2 years in the comany. A little less if you are new, a little more if you are a lifer. I'm always interested in how different benefit packages work at other organizations and I have to say I'm not sure how some places stay in business. I can't even begin to imagine someone being gone from work 37 days as someone stated as their allowable off time. That is nearly 2 full months of the year off from work. Staggering!

Of those 75 employees there are a few that "abuse" their time but in most cases they are the the same people that also miss the mark in other areas of their work. As a general rule they don't last too long in this company. I try to encourage people to use their paid time off, in my experience people that are well balanced in the lives tend to be the best overall employees. We also pay out unused time at the end of the year, we do not bank time for future use.

I had a wise man once tell me that if you can be gone from your job for more than 10 days in a row then you probably aren't needed that badly in the first place.

    This is an interesting thread.

I have zero sick days.. zero vacation days. If one of us should become unable to work for any period of time, the company will shift around the work to the rest of us. I don't think the incapcitated person will get in trouble... but they sure as heck won't get paid.

I love my job.... but should I get injured/sick and unable to type.. I'd be screwed.

40-50 hours of annual sick leave sounds about right to me. We get 100 hours and you better believe 50% of the people I work with blow at least 80 of those hours per year. If I found myself calling out sick 80 hours per year I would be at Johns Hopkins medical center to run comprehensive tests to figure out what was going on with me.

Personally, I have 4 weeks PTO (paid leave) each year. PTO can be used for vacation or sick leave. I can spend 3 or 4 of those days of sick leave.
