I used a Hoyt Alphamax this year as well as last.I do generally get passthroughs but this is my first year with the Magnus heads. My son used them last year and I was sold.He stuck one through his deer and it stuck in a tree. Not bad at 40#'s.Last year he used the 2 blades but I didn't like the blood trail so I let him use the 4 blades this year with MUCH better blood trail but the penetration was the same. Of course we didn't need the blood trail on either of his kills. Both died within 30 yards.Although it is nice to know you have it if needed. Here is a video of it. http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1035630 I used to use Rocket Steelhead mechanicals which outpenetrate many 3 blade fix heads.
The answer to your question is a 2 blade cut on contact BH. The WRONG answer to your question is Rage.
Jeff, someone is probably going to tell you that Rage are COC because of that puny little blade on their tip. Test after test has shown that 2 blade BH's like Zwickey, Magnus, Grizzly, Bear Razorheads, etc perform best. 4 blade COC like Razortrick and CX Quad Pro would be next. Then trocor and pyramid, then cone tip. If you put enough force behind a 2x4 you'll get a passthrough.
I shoot piledriver 250's My total arrow wieght is higher than that im not sure what exactly however. THey are cut to 28 inches and and have a 100 grain head on em. I am thinking about putting on a 125 fixed blade head but I am ot sure what one to put on
28 inches x 10.4 GPI (piledriver 250's)=290 100 grain head Insert (prob around 15 grains) Vanes (15 grains or so) =approximately 420 grain total arrow weight. That is JUST fine to hunt and kill game with blue. I would suggest a cut on contact head.
I like my magnus Stinger 2 blades. Its a heck of a COC broadhead. Its really all about shot placement. I shot rages, had all passthroughs, Shooting the G5 t3 now. Last deer was a pass through. COC fixed blade broadheads are kinda trouble and worry free though
THanks guys, VIrginia do you think that would work with rage I doubt I am going to use them but just so I know.
I've used a Montec 100grn fixed broadhead for the last 6 years and have never had not had an arrow have a pass through. My Moose last year at 62 yards at an upward shot was a complete pass through and still stuck in the ground. He took 7 steps uphill and rolled back downhill 12 steps. I've used the same broad head for the last 3 kills too and they needed very little sharpening. You need to shoot them till your satisfied just like trying out different bows. They fly differently for different people with different draw lengths and different draw weight's. Best of luck on picking the right one. Rocky
Try the Grim Reaper Razor Tips for mechanical broadheads and the G5 montecs for Fixed blade heads. The G5 montec has an awesome sharpenign stone that you can get that makes them my favorite head ever. __________________________ Mathews Monster -74lbs - 28in Bemen Bonecollecter 400-27in-9gpi G5 montec cs 100gr Doinker Chubby hunter 7in carbon shaft stabilizer Ripcord fall away savage pendulum sight =[] (old but good) Kwikiee quiver (my fav)
Slick Trick Magnum! Has a 1 1/8" cutting diameter but I tell no lie in that they take out a 3/4"x3/4" box when they cut! Devistating wounds
The best penetrating head I've used is the G5 Striker 125gr. Even got a clean pass thru on a yukon moose, at 20 yards tho. I've not used them all but quite a few. The other head that I really like for penetration is the NAP nitron.
I have used Muzzy 4 Blade 90 Grains, Rocket Hammerheads, and Rages. All out of 70# bows. Honestly I can't say I could tell the differance as most of my shots have been less than 20 yards and thru the ribs. Probably over 90% pass thrus with all of these heads. Hit them where your supposed to and it really doesn't matter with 70#.
Rob Just out of curiosity, what type of firearm do you carry for backup when hunting those big Kodiak Brown Bears?
x2 on the ST magnums. I have used them on deer and hogs and they are impressive. For mechanical BH's I prefer Grim Reapers over Rage. I am shooting a 420gr arrow and with the ST's they zip thru hogs and deer.
Magnus Stingers the tip on them cuts with the least resistance on many tests, I also think Slick Trick razor Tricks would equally well.
Slick Trick Standards 100gr , put them through many of Deer , really no reason to change , a very good flyin head for sure , i also had good luck with the Razor Tricks
