Something that has always amazed me. We sit there countless hours on stand listening to sounds of the woods. The most famous sound being the squirrel. Something makes us look at every noise made by a squirrel. Sometimes I try to say to myself don't even look it's another tree rat, but you just can't resist the urge. Always the "what if it's not". 99.9% of the time it is but we have to look anyway.

Then all of the sudden you hear the "other sound". Very distinct sound of a deer walking through the woods and you KNOW it's not another squirrel. So why is it that when it's actually a deer you know for sure it's a deer and when it's a squirrel you don't think you know if it's a deer or a squirrel? I can sit there for hours and hours saying dam another squirrel. Then all of the sudden BAM!.... nope that sound is NOT a squirrel.

k maybe i have too much time to think in the woods these days listening to squirrels lol it really is interesting though. I'll never look at another squirrel sound again because I know that I know the difference when it's actually a deer. So... nope you can't make me look anymore. I'm not buying into their act again.

LOL, its because the one time we didn't look at the squirrel (even though we were 100% sure it was a squirrel, cause we've heard em a million times) it turned out to be a deer and we were hosed by the time we figured it out. I know its happened to me, and most likely everyone that has spent a decent amount of time in the woods.

Oh, and you're still looking NY...trust me, as much as you try - you won't be able to take it! LOL :)

I know exactly what you mean.

I look for every sound I here, hoping that it's a deer, but when it's a deer, you know it's a deer before you see it.

    Strange.

    Great post.

    Exactly right, obviously.

Although I thought "that sound" in the title was going to be the "whump" of our arrows striking home in the chest cavity; love that sound, too! :D

I have even drawn back on squirrels that I thought were squirrels thinking that they were gonna come out of the brush.

haha I'm glad someone brought this up. This was my first year hunting and I swore that by the end of the season I would go insane from being so parranoid with sounds. The one thing I found is that my heart notices the difference instantly. When it's a squirrel my heard beat doesn't really change, but as soon as I hear those hoofs or coyotes coming in, my heart skips a beat and just starts to beat that little bit faster.

lol Very true, I have also convinced myself I see a deer in the brush or off in the distance. This is especially true at the start of the season when it takes a deer to refresh what exactly the sound your looking for in that particular spot.

I had a group of squirels around me a couple weeks ago, and they decided to start "chatering" all around me. I said screw it!! I'm outta here, and I almost came back with the .22 and started blasting!!! But i thought better of it, for the sake of my deer hunting.
