I was blessed in the 2010 season with being given the opportunity to take a monster (in my mind) 9 pointer which happened to be my first buck ever. I did not have him scored and really did not think much of it. However this morning I took the time to learn how to score a deer and was wondering what an above average score would be. He is currently hanging on my wall right now at home and later tonight I am going to take him down and score him for the first time. I just wanted to know how he stacks up after I find out how big he actually is Thanks for the help! I will post agian tonight to tell you how he scores!
In the end numbers don't mean a lot. All that matters is you liked him enough to shoot him and mount him :D Congrats on your 1st of many !
First off it depends on where you live. Deer in WI and usually bigger than deer in GA. For where I live in WI I would say 130+ is a big rack but some people go there whole lives without seeing a buck like that.
GUYS YOU ARE NOT HELPING!!! LOL Don't get me wrong I love my deer and I am very proud of him... and he tastes great! I just wanted to know some of the numbers thats all
I can't speak to average in Indiana but average on this site last year in the contest was around 120". We consider a buck in our area of Nebraska above average if he breaks 130". Like many have said though, try not to get too wrapped up in the numbers just enjoy the hunt. If he is a trophy to you he is a trophy to everyone on here!
I have 2 mounted. One is a 164 3/8 gross, the other is in the 135 range. I have 2 euro mounts that are around 120. My next buck would have to be in the 150 range to get a full mount. I probably won't shoot a buck this year unless he's 130 or better. I see several 110 buck every year that I pass.
Around here in PA average is around 100". Above average is 120" and up, and if you are getting into the 140" plus range you are killing a really good buck. There are some true giants around, but they are usually inaccessible by legal means and that is how they grew so old.
congrats on your buck! Me personally being from illinois, I won't shoot a buck unless he is easily 140's to 150 class. I have passed on alot of bucks in the 130's range, but thats me. I want these deer to grow because they have the capabilities to grow much bigger and mature, that way there are those extra years those deer can breed and keep gene pools going. It works especially if everyone around you hunts the same way, but then there are people who will shoot 120" deer on the farm next to you and thats not wrong, but for people who want to continue to see big deer, they have to pass on these deer and be on the same page as those who are practicing good deer management! good luck bud, let us know what he scored...
Im not 100% sure for NC but, I have heard people say above 120 is doing good for here. I have only seen a few that would probably score above 140 and one was a nine point one of my brothers harvested last season. He was a city buck. He got him at 4:00pm eating over his corn pile.
I just got home and scored my deer! Turns out he scored a gross of 132 even!!! This is the same deer that is in my avatar pic. Thanks everyone for your input!
