I'm really new to hunting and I'm looking to buy my first hunting rifle and wanted some advice on what type to buy. I'm definitely going to be deer hunting and probably wild boar. Any suggestions?

I'm still learning about the different types of guns also. I think I've seen a 770 but I'm not sure what you mean by 270.

I realize I'm on a Bow site but hunters are hunters right?

I'm going to vote Remington model 700 in a 308 or 30.06. 270 is also a good choice. It'll be a gun you'll pass on to your grandkids

I was considering a 308 myself since I've been practicing with one at the rod and gun club. I'll probably buy a used gun at first and don't want to spend a whole lot so what should I expect to spend? $400-$500?

Not saying the Remington 700 isn't a great rifle but Savage makes excellent rifles that cost a bit less...the model 11/111 is under 500$ and I recommend .308 cal. as the ammo is readily available and there is a lot of cheap ammo(relatively) out there for practicing...the model 10 is another good one for a little more cost. If you want a little less recoil the 7mm-08 is a good round or go with .270 cal. Nothing wrong with 30-06 either but it kicks a bit more and the .308 can do just about everything it can do with less recoil. The Weatherby Vangaurd is another rifle model you could check out - I have this in .300 Win. Mag and it's a tack driver and cost around 700$ new(but the shoulder feels it big time after 20 rounds - got this in case I ever got to go for elk or moose) and you can get it in any of the aforementioned calibers.

Look for a used rifle to start out with. I have a Remington 700 30.06 and it is a great gun, but I wouldnt rrecommend it for someone just starting out simply because of the initial cost. You might want to even ask if your friends have a gun that you can borrow this season so that you can see if you like that particular gun. There are many options to choose from (bolt action, lever action, semi-auto, etc) and many different calibers. What style of hunting and the area you hunt will determine what gun is best for you. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I'm definately going with a used one as soon as I get a little cash saved up. I luckily ran into a big hunter here with his own revier and said he would let me use his rifles until I can afford one.

I am good friends with a well renowned custom gun maker, Hart Rifles. He builds some of the most accurate guns going. He told me not long ago that the absolute best gun you can buy to have him do his magic on was a Remington Model 700. His explanation was that they don't have do do nearly as much on the gun as far as machine work to get it shooting with extreme accuracy.

I have a Rem 700 in 7mm Rem Mag that will cut holes at 300 yards from a bench. He accurized the gun and built a custom ammo load for the gun for me.

I realize you're not looking for that sort of accuracy or even need it. Just food for thought though when you're looking at different guns.

My personal thoughts are to find a Model 700 in 270. Will gets lots of mileage out of that gun.

I just picked up a Savage Model 14 in a .300wsm and what a sweet shooting rifle right out of the box! I picked it up on sale at Cabelas a few months back and topped it off with a Vortex scope and she is a tack driver! I can't wait to drop a deer with it this year! I own another Savage Model 111 in a .204 for Coyotes, another tack driver! For the money the Savage rifles are the best out there in my opinion, straight shooters right out of the box!

While Savage makes great rifles, if you want something your grandkids will be proud to own get a Remington 700. I have a Remington 700 in .270 that was my first rifle, and since I've accumulated a ton of different rifles.......but this is the gun I carry with me 90% of the time I'm in the woods.

muzzyman, it's funny you mention Hart......I'm planning on having him true the action on my rifle this year, work the trigger a bit, and also drop on a new fluted stainless barrel. Not sure what caliber I'll go with when it's time, but I might do something a bit hotter like the .280 AI.

I use a remington model 7 .308. Its a real tack driver. Plenty of gun for anything I will ever encounter.

Remington Model 700 is great but make sure you stay away from the Model 770.

Cant go wrong with Remington .700. I went with a T/C icon .30-06 for my first rifle.
