I was thinking the other day about my parents house. I was born and raised in the same house that my father built in 1978. My parents still live there today, and I assume they plan to stay there as long as they can.

While I know it doesn't make sense fiscally, and most likely it's due to my nostalgic nature, I really would hate seeing it go to someone else someday. I know my siblings and I will all inherit their share of the 90 acre farm it's on, so I plan to always have access to the land, but I'm not sure it makes sense to leave the house there uninhabited.

Granted, this is a morbid thing to think about since I hope the day where this decision has to be made is a long ways off yet, but I was definitely wondering how it would all pan out. Sort of insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but I digress.

So what happened to your house you grew up in?

Dad lived there until last May when he moved to an independent living facility. We auctioned it off last November. But I know the guy who bought it so I can still visit. I only live 5 minutes away.

After my dad passed away my mom sold it and moved into a condo. Some family lives there now. No big deal to me. I have more important things to worry about.

Basically there were 2 ..........parents and my Grandparents.
Parents was torn down years ago.
Grand parents place sat on 10 acres. I was able to buy it about 10 years ago. By then the house was deteriorated and I had it torn down.
Gramps barn was decent and I was able to fix it up back to how it was when I was a kid.

This was my deal. My parents got divorced In 2000. Dad tried running the milk hauling business by himself without the help of my mom who did so much while they were married. He couldn't hack everything that went Into It and called me and said the milk route and house Is for sale, you wanna buy It? I said no but I want to buy the house. He said nope It's all or nothing. A month later I left a great job with the county highway department and went Into debt big time and bought everything. I couldn't deal with having someone else live In the house I grew up In.

Like Matt, my parents live in the house I was born in 32 years ago. My brother and I just built the houses we'll be likely in for years to come, my sister and her husband found the house they want to raise their unborn children in, and my youngest sister will likely settle out of the area.

So yeah, I've had these thoughts as well. It's a beautiful fully restored and improved farm house, 40,000 dollar garage, an upkept barn, 9 acres, and recently a 55,000 inground pool and landscape project.

The thought of driving by and not thinking of it as ours does seem awfully strange. At the same time, it will be a large chunk of cash to let sit idle.

    Interested in the replies.

My mom and dad built the house....My mom sold the house after I got married since it was only me and her, since my dad died. She then moved back down to be with her brother and sister on the farm. It was weird for awhile...but now I couldnt imagine living that far out now, so they can have it.

The house I grew up in was built by my great grandfathers brother. They built 2 houses exactly the same. They were carpenters from Germany... both immigrated here in the 1800s. When Uncle Jake died my grandfather bought the house off the family. My dad took it over after that. When my dad and mom died my brother Paul bought all our shares at a discounted rate of course. We were just glad it would stay in the family. He rented it out for a few years until he retired from the Marines and moved back home. Most of the land had been sold off over the years by Dad. the house still came with 30 acres. When my wife died I bought an acre off my brother and built a house on it. So today I live up the hill in the woods about 200 yards from the old homestead with my brother as the nearest neighbor. My dad was also a carpenter all his life. 'great cabinet maker but never made a lot of money. He upgraded some things in the house... but it's still basically a post and beam house with upgraded insulation and wallboard. When my brother bought it he put in a real furnace as opposed to the wood/coal stoves we had all my childhood and my dad and mom had forever. In doing so my brother did the unthinkable... he poured concrete on the basement floor. It had always been a dirt floor with a big root cellar for storing our potatoes. As a kid we had 2 gardens that were about 2 and half acres. My mom canned everything. We had no freezers so all venison and veggies and berries we picked in the wild were canned in some fashion.

A view from the front lawn of the old homestead in the fall.

Well since I'm still growing I still reside in my patents house lol. My father built it twenty five years ago. The house lies on our 100 acre family farm (half ours, half our uncles) right between the two houses my parents grew up in. This house will probably be the home to one us four boys eventually.

My brother bought it after our dad passed away. It's cool that it is still in the family, but I had no interest in it. I bought my on place up north where I plan on retiring to.

I lived in 10 houses by 6th grade.... all within 15 miles of each other, lol. Dad liked to build and flip houses to supplement his income so we moved every year or two. Never got attached to any one house. They still live in the house we moved to in 6th grade, and probably will for years to come. I don't see myself moving back home so it'll go up for sale whenever they decide to move on or pass (being only 51 years young, I hope that is several decades away still).

My dad ended up buying 60 or so acres around the house I was raised in and turned it into a hay shed/barn. Funny to see the thing now and to think I used to live in there.

My Dad built the original house I grew up in 1974. At that time, it was only 1100 sq feet. He would go on to add about 2000 sq feet over the years. When I was 17, my parents bought their dream property, and we then built the house they live in today. We sold the original house to the neighbor kid that my Mom would babysit when he was younger. I believe him and his family still live there today. I drive by it about once a year. The house hasn't changed much in 12 years.

I never became accustomed to a single house. I grew up a navy brat. The closest thing would be my grandparents house in my hometown. My father and my 3 uncles grew up in the house. The youngest of my uncle's bought it from my grandmother and still lives there and probably will for many many years. That house is sort of a hub or main base for all my family because everyone still lives in the area.

the house I lived in until I was 14 is a falling down POS. The house my parents live in now is the same one we moved to back when I was 14. I don't get attached to houses, locations maybe, but where my parents live you couldn't pay me to live there. So when my parents eventually pass on, unless my brother or sister wants the house it will get sold.

Grew up in a farm house north of Rochester. It was Grandpa Fitz's. Lived there until 1st grade then moved into town after my folks split. Dad lived at the farm until '91 when he sold it and moved to Ely.

The house is still there (at least it was 2 years ago when I drove by). It even got moved to a new foundation when the co rd was widened. The property isn't what it used to be. its been subdivided and has an old folks home and 4 or five other homes on it now. The hardwooded hillside to the S is nothing but housing developments now.

At least the big ol' barn is still up.

My mom still lives in the house we moved to in town.

It's funny how some last and are taken care of for decades.... and others are neglected and just crumble so quickly. The first time I sold a business(Georgia business) my wife and I traveled to Upstate NY to see if we wanted to move there. We explored the housing market. One gem we found was a small farm with 125 acres, 2 ponds, a 4 car garage with a shop attached. Older farm house but really in good shape. The price was ridiculously low.... $110,000. Well after surveying everything else, I instead took a job with a chemical company that moved me to Maryland. 25 years later my wife died and I moved back to NY. Couldn't find a house I liked so built one on the old homestead. About a year ago I was wondering about that old farm we considered. I went down the road it was on... but couldn't find it. A couple weeks ago I was on that road and said.... that house was right here... I'm sure. I pulled in the yard. The house was in such deplorable condition it's no wonder I didn't recognize it. The small barn had caved in to the ground. All that was left of the 4 car garage/shop was the stone built foundation. 31 years and the place was destroyed.
