... in the next five years? Hunting related, of course. 1- First and foremost, enjoy the hunting location and time that I currently have. Never know how long we'll be at the resort. I'm very blessed with what I have. I need to keep that in mind. 2- I'd love to get an elk on my Colorado trip next Fall. 2013 can't get here fast enough. 3- Want to take a wolf with my bow this fall. One step further, I'd like to be the 1st Minnesotan in 40 years to do so legally. 4- I want to piece together a much larger portion of the puzzle as far as deer movement and land use here. I'm starting to get bits and pieces, but I'm hoping to get a clearer overall picture in the next few years. 5- Take a trip with someone into the BWCAW to chase whitetail. Canoe, Camp, Hunt... what's not to love? 6- Perhaps a new bow by then, but no rush. 7- Find some sheds! Man it's a pain here. I've only ever found one dead head and one moose shed. 8- Gear wise, one more LW stand, a good pack, and a hand full of trail cams. 9- Like to see my wife take her first deer, but she's pretty streaky in her hunting interest. 10- Make it to another G2G So, what say the rest of BH.com?
5 years eh? Let's see. 1. Put myself in the position to shoot at least one good buck on film each year. 2. Iowa whitetail hunt. 2013 is shaping up like it could be the year. 3. Wyoming mule deer hunt. 2013 hopefully, although 2014 more likely. That's really it for right now. I just want to enjoy my time hunting, stay safe, and kill some stuff.
Seeing how I am new to archery; 1. Be able to put three arrows in a hole the size of a golf ball at 30 yds consistantly. 2. Really understand what I'm doing in respect to bow hunting. 3. Take my first deer with my bow. 4. Take a big buck with my bow. 5. Bag Elk, Moose and possibly Bear, I know this may sound like a tall order for a five year plan, but I ain't gettin any younger.
In my 5 years i would like to; 1. Buy a good piece of property at least 30 acres which might happen in with the one i am interested in 2. Plant a couple food plots 3. Build a few more deer stands 4. Shoot a deer above 130" with rifle or a bow 5. Shoot a non-Typical with a rifle or a bow 6. I want to go on an out of state hunt preferably elk but that's unlikely in the near future
Hunting whitetail related goals. The first 3 are gun related. 1. Help my original hunting mentor, my father, get his largest buck (current is 1.5 yr old 5 pointer) before his hunting career and his life end. 2. Help my daughter (7) successfully tag her first deer with a gun. 3. Help my son (4) successfully tag his first deer with a gun. 4. Continue to introduce archery to my children as a pastime, not just solely as a way to kill something! 5. Tag a buck with archery gear larger (gross inches) than my previous best. If I ever get to #5 it will be time to get into the 170's!!! Maybe by then I will be able to afford another mount that will collect dust around the house. 6. Elk hunt CO with a close friend who has asked me for years.
1. Get a new Bow - I have a PSE Beast, looking at a Brute. 2. Shoot a 130 pt Buck with my Bow. 3. Shoot a deer with my .357 pistol. 4. Shoot a Turkey with a Bow. 5. Archery Mule Deer hunt - planning for 2013 hunt in North Dakota Badlands. 6. Shoot better a longer ranges - maybe out to 40yds. All within reach, and its fun to plan such rewarding ventures.
1. Figure out the bucks on my property (If this is possible) 2. Kill a good buck every year. 3. Get it on film. 4. Remember to hit record. 5. Now that my daughter has graduated from college, go on more out of state hunts. 6. Retire. (Hopefully in Feb. 2015) This will help will hunting time. 7. Aquire more hunting land.
For archery, you should be able to hit a sqirrel at 10 yds, a rabbit at 20, a pig at 30, a deer at 40, and an elk at 50 yards in the chest cavity. No one ever hits a golf ball at 30 yds every time. Maybe once out of 6 or 12 arrows. So give yourself a break.
To find out all about all your bucks just go out and spotlight them before the season. Works like a charm.
Those are really good goals. I always bring a handgun with me on every hunt, but I have only needed it twice. Once to finish a buck that I had gutshot. And once to deal with intruders into my campsite. But I always bring it. A 357 is as good as a 44 for the things I have used it for -- point blank headshot on the buck and OC regarding the intruders who then saw it and took off immediately.
In Calif planting the food plot would make it illegal to hunt over it in the fall. I guess NYS is different.
My goals -- 1 - get in shape for hunting season; 2 - get out there to scout it; 3 - get out there 2 days before opening day, set up camp, and backpack up into the ridgeline where I normally hunt.
YES!!! I'm looking at retiring around June 2015 myself. As far as hunting goals go, I really don't have any other than to stay healthy. I just want to hunt deer. As long as I can hunt, I'll be happy.
5 Years... You are asking a lot. I'll give you my top 3. 1. Family first - Continue to educate my sons so they can be a better person, father, hunter then I am. In 5 years my kids will be 12, 9, and 6. I hope to have the oldest slinging arrows at deer by then. 2. Continue to pursue new hunting land. (I never stop) 3. Film and harvest a buck greater than 150" with archery equipment (this year I hope!)
1. Get a nice Buck and a Doe on film every year, first time self filmer! 2. Gain more hunting land 3. Try and do some things unique while filming, kinda off the wall fresh new things through creativity! 4. Regain my Turkey hunting mojo again, I failed this season! 5. Give Fitz a hug and leg wrap before he drives off next time
1. Film my son shoot a buck with a bow 2. Film my daughter shoot her first deer 3. Film myself shoot a mature buck each year 4. Shoot a velvet buck 5. Be on the 6 time BH.COM deer contest champs team
