Wheat, Rye or Oats would be about the easiest.

Assuming you haven't limed it prior to planting, go with a somewhat hardier cereal grain like Rye (not rye grass). This would provide good green-up, will have allelopathic effects on the fall and spring competing weeds, and provide good green manure when you till under in the spring.

If the PH is sufficient, I would plant clover with a cover crop of winter rye. That's my go-to, and I love it.

Not all deer herds will like brassicas. So unless you know the deer in your neighborhood like them, I'd stay away from them.

I know one guy who has planted them for 3 years and the deer just will not eat them on his farm.

You know more than "A" guy.... :(

I just worked up 2 more spots last night.

Turnips in one and clover in the other.

How do you know they don't like it if you don't plant it ? ? I'm lucky to have enough left to hunt over when season gets here they keep it mowed so short. I have seen them not eat the bulbs but they keep the tops mowed off. It looks like I was in there with a weed whacker. :D
