The keys for me are go easy on the upper layers and not to wear any headgear or gloves. It's amazing how much temperature control can be accomplished by making your head and hands cold. I also rarely ever put anything other than baselayers on my top. Put extra top layers once in my stand after they get hoisted up with my bow as they're strapped or in my backpack. In really cold weather...I have real hot sweaty feet issues in my 2400gram rubber boots...so rubber crocs are now in the arsenal to wear to the stand area where I'll slip my boots on. (obviously if deep snow I won't be able to as my feet would get soaked.)
I usually wear my pants and then a base layer too and then layer up once in my stand. This morning I wore my pants and then my UA treestand baselayer it was. 26 degrees and no gloves or hat Then I put on my pullover and vest jacket was there if needed Best advice is to give yourself more time so you can walk slower Tougher for guys using climbers or sticks and stand carrying more weight Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Plus, no need to worry anout ticks up here anymore this time of year. I started wearing as little as possible to the stand last year and what a huge difference. Instead of being wet and cold and going in at 10:30, i can sit all day. It makes that much of a difference. I will carry my coveralls or bibs in attatched to my climber. I start to cool down while setting the climber up and then climb with my heavy clothes half way on. I'll sit like that until i start to get chilled then finish getting dressed, all before it gets light.
I generally wear my base layers (UA Cold Gear 2.0 under Cabela's ECWCS Polar) and sometimes even my hunting pants. My hat, shirt, jacket, etc., all go on at the base of the tree. I sweat a lot but I also can only sit 4-5 hours due to my back so my system works for me.
Usually just a shirt and my pants. I usually don't wear my hat or get fully dressed till I'm at the stand. Blessings..........Pastorjim
2400gr thinsulate? Holy smokes! I can see why you get sweaty feet! Where are you hunting? Do any of you other guys wear boots this heavy? I will wear my 600gr Under Armour HAW boots all year. Once it starts to get down below 20 I'll start adding liner socks and possibly a toasty toe on those really frigid days. I never liked the bulk or the weight of the heavy boots!
I have a pair of 2000 gr lacrosse lace up boots that I wear when it gets cold. 600 gr for cool weather and uninsulated for warm weather. I wear a polypropylene sock only and add a wool if my feet get cold, but that doesn't happen with these boots anymore. I have a real issue with my feet sweating and in the past have had to change socks at my stand before climbing, even with uninsulated boots. Quality base layers are essential at wicking away the moisture from the walk in. I'll wear my bibs when its cold but no jacket. I never wear a jacket to stand and almost always wear some sort of jacket after settling in. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I basically wear what I will be wearing while in the stand minus my coat. I just take it nice and slow walking in and don't get over heated. It also helps that I just walk out my back door and into the woods. I always pack a few extra shorts just in case I get cold that I can add while in the stand. I hate doing that though because I have to undue my safety harness in order to add layers.
lol @ 2400 g thinsulate boots. I'm surprised you didn't opt for the 15,000 btu boots, it actually lights a fire inside of them haha. I wear irish setter rubber boots, 800gr and wear these all year. early season my feet get WARM, late season they feel so comfortable. I usually wear regular socks unless it is freezing or wet. I carry my stand every time, so I go to the stand in as little gear as possible. I keep my pants on, and a thin longsleave shirt. any other gear is in my pack.
I wear a base layer. Over that on the I wear a pair of camo pants that are more like pajamas. They are super thin. On top I wear a fleece vest (sleeveless). Head I wear a light weight performance beanie. Hands I wear Under Amour liner gloves. That's it unless it is below 20. Everything else is packed in.
I wear a pair of 400 gram lace up boots all year. With that I wear a wool/synthetic blend sock (underarmour) and I'll use toe warmers if it's below 40 for any length of time. I have heavy wool socks for those really fridges days. Also have a pair of 1000 gram snow boots by cabelas but they're only good for sitting still and keeping my feet warm. They're so cumbersome and bulky I don't think I'd want to walk any distance in them unless absolutely necessary (like in 12 inches of snow).
My cousin Vinny deer clip - YouTube Im sure this has been shared before, thought it fit for a what are you wearing thread...lol **warning for language**
You guys have some great suggestions but what do you do wiyh all of the clothes you are going to put on? Do you put them in a backpack or carry them? If you use a backpack which one do you use? Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk
I usually wear all my bottoms, but carry my tops. I never wear a hat or gloves going in. I know that helps alot, me anyways. I also try to take it slower if I have a long way to go, or am packing in a stand, etc. When its colder, I'll sometimes bring my insulated jumpsuit. Then I just slip it on when I get to my stand, or at a later time when I start to cool off. What I've found over the years...for me, there is a "right" time to make sure I have all my layers back on. If I wait too long, I've lost too much of the heat I built up going in...and tend to get cold quicker. If I time it right, I don't get cold and still don't stay heated up / sweaty. I wear 800gr and 1000gr rocky boots. Never have an issue with my feet.
