I use crkt knifes at work (diesel mechanic) they have proven very reliable to me in my work. The knife holds up very well and stays very sharp when it needs sharpening it only takes a second to make sharp again. With that said i am piecing together hunting gear over the next year. What do you think of this knife? There is also a gerber bear gylls (sp?) Edition i have never used a gerber but know they make nice knifes. I am leaning towards this crkt. http://www.crkt.com/Ultima-5in-Black-Blade-Veff-Combo-Edge

For the price you pay for one, you cannot beat a CRKT. Yes, there are much better knives out there, but you will pay out the nose for them.

Is this knife to be used for general camp chores, skinning, or what? That will make a huge difference in what knife you want to take.

Personally, in my everyday life I carry both CRKT and Emerson folders at the same time. When I am in the field I carry the Emerson for general stuff and then I have a nice little skinner fixed blade by Buck.

Edit: At the price they are charging for that particular CRKT, I would rather have a Tops knife. Something like one of http://www.knifeoutlet.com/shop/10browse.asp?category=tops%20knives those.

I am looking for a general hunting knife. Cut rope cut branches or field dress a deer. I can order the ckrt through cornwell tools and get a discount and free shipping. I am going to continue looking. I like the knifes you posted. Will have to look at them some more. Thank you. Loving the site

Hey, I say if you can get a deal on that knife, then get it. I would not, however, use it for skinning. I prefer small knives for that type of work

Honestly, the bear grylls knives aren't worth their weight to carry. I have multiple gerber knives and multitools that have always served me well and I have a few from Benchmade. Benchmade is hard to beat, you pay a little more, but you get really great knives and they have free sharpening for the life of the knife. That solved the debate for me.

CRKT knifes are sweet and hard to beat for the money plus they stand behind their product.

I forgot to add that I wouldnt buy anything with Bear Grylls on it, simply because it said Bear Grylls on it.

I just know that crkt has treated me very well. Maybe i will just carry two knifes. One for field dressing and one for general working knife. I get a decent deal @100 dollars for the knife i listed. I dunno what im going to do yet. I have all summer to decide. Still have to do my hunter safety course. Thanks for the opinions guys keep em coming

Keep in mind that no tool will do every chore to the optimum efficiency. You can have a good all-around knife, but it will do everything ok, not great, or even easily.

Different tools for different jobs. I think that Havalon knife would probably be super groovy for skinning.
