We have just adopted our first dog. He is a black lab hound mix. Probably around 75% lab and we're thinking fox hound for the mix. Has that tall slender look like a fox hound. We are looking for good food that doesn't break the bank. My parents have always fed science diet with good luck but from reading I have done Science Diet just seems like a lower quality food. Have been looking pretty hard at Authority grain free. What are your guy's thoughts or am I reading way too much into this.

California Naturals. Its high quality food. At $50/bag the only reason we use it, is because our dog is allergic to a lot.

Feed my lab Beneful. It's a decent food yet doesn't break the bank at 25$ a bag.

He is not such a little guy. He is a year old and weighs about 55lb. At first we were looking to adopt a puppy but in meeting several we figured out real quick that was more that what were bargaining for in our first dog. The last time my parents had a true puppy around was when I was around 10. So neither of us really have any experience with it. Our next dog will probably be a puppy though. I will post some pics as soon as I get some. He had to go to the vet to get snipped before they would let him come home so we will get him on Monday. Just trying to get the last of the kinks worked out as far as food and a couple other odds and ins before he comes home.

Well good luck with your dog. Mine isn't much of a puppy either. He is two now and 90 lbs! But I love him so much

Thank you. I don't think ours will quite get that big. He will fill out some but I'm thinking he be in that 70-75lb range.

Yeah mine is surely big. He isn't even fat. He is a very lean muscular dog which is why it is so surprising

Blue Buffalo Adult Large Breed formula for my Dobe. The stuff is amazing. He's 8, lazy as can be and doesn't have an ounce of fat on him.

The authority brand foods are pretty good we switched from royal canine. The royal canine was too rich for my dogs sensitive stomach. We've had no problems since switching to authority brand. My cattle dog is 3yrs old and has been eating authority the last 2yrs. Hes 50lbs of pure muscle so no worries about the dog getting fat.

My lab has wheat allergies, so I switched him up to the Nutro Limited Ingredients Venison and Potato. He also does well with the Venison and Brown Rice. I have to buy one or the other sometimes depending on what the store has in stock. Both are between $50-60 for a 25-35lb bag.

It's expensive but I've saved money since making the switch. I was constantly having to take him in for ear infections and skin allergies. Haven't had a single issue since I made the switch.

I really want my dog to try the 28 day eukanaba challenge with my dog but m ywife wont let me switch my dog off of the $90/25lb dog food. Its Acana? something about all natural never frozen thing. I will admit my dog has some great fur and gets to eat bison, duck, chicken, and all these other exotic things I never have. But wow it is expensive. From all the pet stores ive been to, it is the top tier. Thinking about buying a silver bowl to serve it in too. He gets all the bedspace he wants too.

We feed Wellness food, it was recommended by our vet.

No corn filler, lower fat, and a digestible amount of protein. The dogs race to the feed bowl.

It is spendy, but they are really healthy, and it cuts way down on the yard fudge.

My dog eats beneful, it's cheap and well recommended by the vets back home.

I took him to a vet here in Birmingham in the nicer area of town once and they were trying to convince me to switch to some uppity crap that was $90/bag. I told them I've seen him eat anything from grass to cockroaches to a stuffed animal (pooped cotton stuffing for days lol).... He doesn't need that crap. Lol

We use Taste of the Wild. Totally grain free.

When there is grain used for filler, they need much more food to get the needed nutrition, this also creates much more crap in the yard.:(

Initial cost is slightly more but they eat less and are healthier.

We have a lab that weighs about a 90#-100#(not fat, just that big) he only eats about 2 cups in the morning and 2 at night. (1 scoop each feeding)

A 30# bag cost about $40 (give or take)

I feed our black lab the Iams lamb formula. We used to feed her the salmon beneful and she smelled something AWFUL!!! The vet said to change her diet and I could not have been happier when the smell went away.

Agreed on the Nutro. Our Louisiana Catahoula Leopard has been eating Nutro since he came home. [IMG]

We feed Nutrisource as it is grain free and very high in protein and plenty of fat for working dogs, we get it through a wholesaler for $42/bag.
