I used to be comfortable judging on the ground too but I've come to rely on my rangefinder anytime I take a shot. I find myself ranging deer that I know are well within 20 yards. Just a habit I guess.
I leave mine sit on the shelf at Gander Mountain. I'm not sure when or how a range finder became a necessity for bowhunting. I've never had, nor wanted one. My daypack is jammed as it is.
