I may or may not scream really loud and run like a little girl toppling anything in my path.... That being said I usually wont kill snakes. Unless they are water snakes in our creek, they eat all the fish. We usually find 10-15 in our minnow traps every year.
I remember in the news last year a guy was bit by a rattlesnake while turkey hunting in Alabama, he had a snake bite kit with him and the doctors claimed it saved his life...
I have never came across a venomious snake while in the woods, but would most likely let it go if I did. As long as it wasn't in an area that was close to houses. I will always let black snakes and other non venomious snakes go. Never understood why people go out of their way to kill snakes. They don't want to see you as much as you don't want to see them.
Me Too, while i'm running I also cuss and scream and put words together that don't make any sense....lol. If I can hold it together long enough, I kill everyone I see! I HATE them all!!!!!! Not sure how good they really work, but I bought some snake gators to use when checking my trail camera's in the summer. If not for them, My camera's would never get checked...lol.
Its funny this thread popped up yesterday, I went out today to check trail cams and came across a snake. It was a lot bigger than most I see so I got up close to see what kind it was. It was a Black Racer at about 60" long( not a venomous snake) and I have never seen one in the wild. This thing took off and was moving faster thru the woods then I ever could, I don't think I could run as fast as this snake can if I had to.
That Jack Russell is a beast. Never expected that. Holt those racers are pretty cool. I always let them go. Crazy fast in the woods!
Go around them. I stepped on a water moccasin last year while hunting. Made me jump a little but i just backed up and went around. Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I find it funny when people are afraid of snakes. For some reason ive never had that fear....bees are a different story though. I kill a few black water snakes every year in my pond just because they eat fish/frogs. Otherwise i let em all be.
In the past week we've come across three rattlesnakes. One somebody else had killed (it was next to a temporary sheep and horse corral). One was on a horse trail, we took pics but didn't mess with it. The other one my hubby deemed to be a safety hazard and took it out. I skinned it, kept the rattle and sent the skin to my mom who has been wanting a snake skin for a while (good luck in Japanese folk lore). No sense in wasting the thing. In the past I've only killed one copperhead and a water moccasin. That's out of hundreds of snakes I've come across. I generally dislike indiscriminate killing of reptiles. Many folks around here will kill a rattlesnake on sight. It usually *is* a safety issue. Particularly if rattlers are on trails. Kids, dogs, horses, sheep and rattlesnakes are a bad mix. Harmless gopher snake. I took it's picture and then let it go. Great Basin western rattlesnake. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
See my post above... he was one of our church members. I don't know if the SBK was effective or not but the doctors said it was.
heh,, i remember last year round this time there was a newer member on the forum who was finding snakes like crazy in his yard, and was freaking out killing them all. turns out they were corn snakes...pfft!!
Yea I remember that. I just usually move the non poisonous ones. They must have had a bad experience with a snake before or lacked knowledge in what snake is what. Im pretty sure he killed 2-3 too.
For those that kill snakes, do you know which ones in your area are threatened or endangered? And how good are your snake ID skills? We would be up in arms if somebody illegally killed a deer, but snakes shouldn't be any different.
