I've stumbled into a few Copperheads at one of my spots. I thanked them for not biting me, and went on my way

i carry a .38 in my pocket.... if they leave me no choice i kill. Luckily it hasnt happened often, but in the swamps and around water so much that i feel better if i take it with me.

I have a girly attitude when it comes to stinging insects and snakes if they surprise me, unfortunately when the bees and wasps surprise you they sting. If i could exterminate every wasp, ground bee, hornet, etc. i would be more than happy to do so.

If you have time to kill a snake... you have plenty of time to avoid a snake. It's the ones you don't see that will get you so just be smart about where you put your hands.

BTW, I read once that over 90% of adults bitten have two things in common. #1 They are bitten on the hand. #2 They are intoxicated.

Last words of a redneck... "Hey Ya'll watch this."

Depends on what snake it is. If its just a garter snake then ill keep walking by or maybe catch it for fun. If its a venomous snake then im probably going to be headed the other way after I look at it for a min or so.

No matter your stance on snakes, everyone should carry a snake bite extractor kit. It's worth the 14 bucks ,if that cause it can make a difference in life or death. They are very simple to use and can remove most of the venom, giving you time to get to a hospital safely and administer anti venom. Not only do they work on snake bites but also wasp, bees and hornets to remove the venom and alleviate the pain.

This is very true. I always see tons of snakes but never have one on me. Should rethink that.

Please don't! Snake bite kits are worthless and actually do more harm than good. If bitten, try to remain calm, restrict movement of the affected area, and get to a hospital as soon as possible.

I have witnessed first hand them working quite effectively with no visible damage or suction cup marks. When my uncle got bitten we were able to fill up the largest suction cup 10 times in less than 15 minutes. Perhaps it was due to an anti coagulate in the venom but I have to believe that all of that blood being removed took out a significant amount of venom. Not to mention after his bite he had no tissue damage from the rattler or the extractor. So I will continue to use it.

Then I'm sure he would have been fine without the kit too...

This is very interesting guys. I will have to read up on this. Never really put too much thought into it. Any one else have any claims about snake bite kits being either beneficial or harmful?

I've heard this too. It sounds like it makes sense...but having worked for various emergency departments I can tell you that the majority of snake bite victims were little kids and older folks. (like grandma working in the garden or pops getting the lawnmower out of the barn). So I don't know if those statistics have been manipulated. (as is done with many statistics ;) )

The effectiveness of suction kits is dependent on each individual bite, which several factors play into. Bite location, type of toxin (hemo vs neuro) depth of punctures, etc. However, the fact of the matter is once that stuff is in your bloodstream there's little if anything a suction system can do. Blood travels unbelievably fast in the body...IV drugs effect the brain literally within seconds, even when injected into extremities.

The only way a suction system would be of real use is if the bite victim was lucky enough to have the venom injection site in a largely blood vessel-free area where the venom would pool and not be carried away quickly. Even then the venom would be absorbed fairly quickly into the capillaries.

If its poisonous its dead if I can no matter where i'm at. Those posted pics gave me the hibbie gibbies. All others get a pass. I walked into the garage the other day and saw a garden snake. After my little girl scream, I realized what it was and left it. Maybe it catches a mouse.
