Im pushing my mid 50's and and I've seen things in life that scare me heck of a lot more than a man in a uniform. Not sure how his gun as a trained personnel would shoot any more accurate than mine. The man/person behind the trigger makes the gun go boom and determines how accurately it hit its mark.
In the military they teach you ways of shooting that are much more accurate than learning from grandpappy, trust me. I thought I was a damn good shot when I joined the marines but I was below average. Now I can hit a man sized target from 500 yards 9 out of 10 times, with open sight no problem. I'm not trying to brag or anything, just saying, I've acquired quite a skill set since I've joined up.
I gotta agree that the training one gets in the service provides you a set of skill that are far and above the average joes. I'm just saying that the average joe can shoot well enough to defend himself pretty darn good, and some of us a heck of a lot better than most. Hence the man behind the trigger statement.
