Today I showed up at the property at 5:15, sunrise wasn't until 7:45 and I only have a short walk. I park in an open field that is in a valley and when I open my car door and step out to listen to the silence I am greeted with the sound of deer in every direction from me. The ground has tall grass and is frosted so I can't move without making noise. I hear them on the hill behind me, in the next field over and on the hill I have to hike up. It sounded like the woods at 8am after the squirrels wake up. I am not prepared to hunt since I normally get dressed at the car to try and help scent. What would you do in this situation? After standing there freezing for about 5 min I decided to just make some noise, get ready and hike up the mountain and take my chances spooking the deer. Sent from my PB99400 using Tapatalk
If possible find another way in to your stand. That is the best I can tell you without knowing the property layout etc. Dave
I've heard running works. it spooks them before they catch your scent so we you are settled in and it quiets down they come back. I've had the same thing happen to me, But was afraid to run in the dark woods with my bow in hand. (I'd trip)
Unfortunately it is the "only" way into the property. There is 1 gate at the bottom of the property that connects 2 fields that are seperated by a thickett. We park in the first field. I follow a small road that goes up and around a swampy thickett of briers then I cut straight up a mountain to where I was hunting from Saturday. Here is a map of the property. I was trying to get to "G" on the map. We park in the field between D and H. The stream that runs along the north side of the field is so thick around it that you couldn't get through without a machete. You have to follow the road to north of the pond and then double back on another road that isn't marked on this map. map by MMeador, on Flickr So again I pose the question to others, what would you of done in this situation?
that is tough, because obviously, their bedding area is near your parking spot. I have hunted places like this and I was never really about to overcome it. You will see deer on stand, but you are definitely going to spook them going in and they will know you are there. Approaching from another area is the only answer like someone said.
Try this! or try honking your horn several times, or get a Yote call and start making noice with it. I hear its the bomb for removing deer out of fields so that you can make your hike, and they normally come back after awhile. I've never tried it so don't get me lying to you. good luck buddy.
